4. I really like those Mini Coopers.

I've seen a lot of them around Chicago, appreciating the design. And then I saw "The Italian Job", the film with Mark Walberg and Edward Norton, where Mini Coopers were prominently featured, and REALLY wanted one.

We're restoring a 65 and a 70 Mach 1 but I can't drive them, they're too close to racing level(and they're always in the shop) We like the Mustangs now.

i was just commenting on how a car with "over 100hp" is considered fast by you. i know people with motorcycles that have more than that! yes, a VW is lightweight, but it's also severely crippled by displacement limitations and drivetrain durability issues as well. I have seen them dip into the 11's at the track, but that's a race-only vehicle with full slicks and gearing for 1/4 mile.


hp does equal mph in the sense that you can't go fast without a substatial amout of it.

wasn't trying to "out do" you, i just thought it was funny. i have to admit, you can't just jump in a car with insane horsepower and drive it like you know what you're doing, and not everyone even wants to. the few occasions that i let someone else drive my car, most of them didn't want anything to do with more than 1/2 throttle.



most power i've experienced was 550hp in a '72 chevelle..it's mind boggling to be pinned to the seat without any hope of leaning forward..

my dad actually autocrossed VW beetles for quite a few years and took great pride in kicking corvette's asses on the short courses.

I had a 67 Wagoneer 4WD back in the late 70's. The exerior panels were bolted on with 1/4" screws.

I remember one time, I lost the main drive shaft connection on the axle (blts sheared) and I was miles from nowhere. I took the entire shaft off, switched to 4x4 and had no problem driving home on the wheel drive prop shaft.

My sister totaled it out one winter due to icy road conditions...hit a tree direct on. SHe ended up with only a banged up knee...

Great car.....very much like a Jetta, but with a 2 liter engine, aluminum block engine, Dedion suspension, 5 speed, suicide throttle....a blast to drive in traffic or a winding road. Basically the same package as the Spider, but in a sedan.

Only problem was it was hot blooded....as soon as snow season started, it was nothing but trouble.

check it out: W-16 engine 1001 horsepower Think of it, estimated top speed of 254 mph. They haven't even bothered to test the 0-60 speeds, but it can hit 188 in 14 seconds) of course, the subscription list is closed (they're only making 300) and the base price of 1million Euro (plus tax) is a bit of a problem, but they ar ecompletely costomisable, from the colour scheme, to the optional 20 carat diamond in the middle of the speedometer. And they're street legal in the States. THe resale value is diminshed, however, by the fact that you have to resell it to Bugatti, and no one else. There's a guy about 25 miles from me, who is a licensed Caterham agent/assember. He has a few at his place right now, and I've driven a couple of them. He's currently building them with a 1300cc Suzuki motorcycle engine, and a six speed box. He just broke the Canadian production car speed record, at 174.6KM/h, and 0-60MPH in 3.78 seconds.

Incidentally, it's a sequential gearbox, so that means the same sig gears can be run in reverse. He made an attempt at the world record for land speed in reverse (165.08KM/h), but fell short at 164.47KM/h. In his words: "The car was extremely difficult to control in reverse at those speeds".

Well, duh!

Not to make you too envious, but as soon as we're back on our feet financially, I'll be starting my own 7. I had already posted the deposit on my kit before the bottom dropped out of my industry. Of course, in the time it took for Caterham to ship the crates to the Canadian dealer, my industry collapsed. Luckily, the fellow near me doesn't mind honouring my deposit indefinately (although we'll soon see how he defines "indefinately"). As soon as I can scrape together the remaining $30K (Canadian), I'm on my way! BTW, mine is a Super 7 Classic, with the solid rear end (3.62 ratio), and a Ford Crossflow SuperSprint motor (balanced, blueprinted, mildly ported, squeaking out about 140hp in a 900lb car).

Oh, my dream car is the new Aston Martin DB9, by the way.

Hybrids still burn petroleum... petroleum is BAD!

Biodiesel is THE way. The fuel is made from plants and bio-matter, so you also support American farmers, not Saudi shieks.

Biodiesel is about the same price as gas, burns fairly clean, and there are dozens of cars and trucks on the market that can use it today. A VW TDI Jetta, Bug, or Golf will get 49mpg, for example. They can also run on regular diesel as well (when you can't find bio).

Personally, I want a black Jetta TDI Wagon.

I also want more places to buy biodiesel here in LA.
