Poll question: What is the primary reason you watched the Oscars last night?

It's been ages since I've seen a movie, so the only reason I watched the Oscars last night was because I was hoping for some controversial political statement to be made by Clooney or Stewart, a la Micheal Moore.

However, I was sorely disappointed.

I enjoy movies, for both the craftsmanship and the themes. I'm not an Action/Adventure fella - I prefer "chick flicks," depicting character development, relationships, and sociopolitical issues. (Although I appreciated the 'Kill Bill' pairing.)

I don't feel at all threatened if the Academy choices don't reflect my preferences ... but I'll take the feedback and incorporate such nominations and awards in my viewing choices. I sometimes take a closer look to learn from the choices.

Oscar shows is when they had animated cartoon characters in some of the seats, but a real-life seat filler came and sat down in the seat which was being occupied on-screen by Minnie Mouse. She just sat there smiling while the whole world watched Minnie go on with whatever she was saying - I wish I had a clip of that, it was a panic.

I watched to see Stewart. Hadn't seen any of the movies so really didn't have a huge opinion about who should get what but I will follow Stewart anywhere.

I've been an Oscars watcher for 38 years (if I did the math right, that makes my first one 1968, which is just about right), hardly ever missing one, and once VCRs were affordable for the little people (about 1984) I've been taping it as well. My first and greatest love has been "Hollywood," though I admit freely I was always more of a TV fan than a movies fan. However, the chance to see performers outside of their roles was key to watching variety shows, awards shows and other such venues where they could be themselves.

So watching last night was not just a one-off, it was my yearly visitation to the past year of movies, cheering on my favorites, even if they didn't win, and shedding a few tears at the losses of the previous year as well.

And in September, I make the same yearly trip to the Emmy Awards, though after awhile TV awards get really boring when the same damned TV shows end up winning year after year after year.

I will admit, however, that I thought Jon Stewart on last night's awards was a great treat--combining my enjoyment of entertainment with a personal happiness at seeing Jon taking on the whole "Hollywood" scene. :)

13. I didn't watch, I wandered in and out of the room and glanced at the TV

once in a while.

I think the only bit I saw was the fake best actress campaign ads, which were hysterical (that Dames for Truth bit had me rolling) Other than that, I couldn't tell you who won what without looking at DU.
