I made a shocking discovery about my cat's past today (RANT)

I took Eleanor to the vet because she has to have her teeth pulled due to lingering periodontal disease . The vet had to take X-rays in case she had internal tumors of any kind. She was okay, but I noticed two bright spots on the X-ray photo. What the vet told me next nearly broke my heart. "These are pellets," he said through his heavily-accented English. "Whoever shot her knew what he was doing, because she has one in her spine and one near her heart, but it has not caused any paralysis. These are at least a year old, and there is no need to remove them because there is no infection present." I thought I misunderstood him the first time. I had no idea. I know little Elly Belly had a rough life before we adopted her 3 years ago, but I never knew a thing about her being shot with a BB gun.

What kind of sick asshole would shoot such a sweet little thing? She is the most loving, affectionate little kitty I have ever met. She never bites, howls or scratches. She's my little baby girl. People make me sick sometimes.

3. I know how you feel.

I had a beautiful little kitty named Zep who was shot and killed by some sick bastard with a pellet gun.

He was hit in the leg and stomach and was hurt too badly to come home...so he froze to death outside. I found him frozen stiff in an apartment parking lot....and never found out who did it.

I'm glad your kitty is going to be ok. Elly has a good life now! :)

4. Poor little thing

People make me sick. I will never understand why people are so afraid of cats that they have to abuse them like that. It is an obvious sign of low self esteem when people feel the need to treat animals that way.

15. My Alice is missing one tooth

She had an abscess before we adopted her and they had to remove an upper canine tooth. Maybe that was one of the reasons she had a "last chance" sign on her cage :( It's cute watching her eat because she has to tilt her little head to the right side. She still drops food everywhere though :)

Despite our best efforts to treat the few remaining teeth she had left, the infection is so far gone that the others can't be saved. It's alright, because she only eats moist food anyway.

7. I'm sorry.

But I think she'll probably be okay. I had a cat who was shot at, one pellet got under the skin and drifted along her belly, the other one penetrated her kidney after breaking her leg. The pellets were never removed, because cats encapsule foreign matter in their bodies, and if it's not threatening, it's mostly okay.

They mostly aim straight for the heart region. But if your vet thinks the pellets won't cause trouble, don't worry much.

Still, yes, people can make you sick pretty easily with something like this.

10. I volunteer with a rescue group and such abusing is shockingly common

unfortunately. The world is filled with sociopathic assholes-no doubt about that. I'm just glad that your sweet girl has you to care for her and keep her safely indoors.

13. Sad and sick

This is not rare. When I adopted Stevie, she had been at the SPCA for more than a year (in the old days the SF SPCA did not euthanize animals unless they were hopelessly sick or irredeemably violent.)

Stevie had been badly abused. Her tail broken. Most of her teeth missing or broken. Because kicking a cat in the face made some goddamn sonofabitch motherfucking asshole feel like a real big man. Damn him to hell!

Do you still allow her to go outside regularly? Cats are subject to so many potential dangers outside...I know I'd be bundle of nerves if mine were to be outside and I didn't know where they were - too many sick assholes out there.

They feel they are doing a "public service" by taking potshots at strays, or anything else that happens to walk or fly past. I used to work at a wildlife clinic, and I got so tired of seeing X-rays of the fragile bones of hawks and owls, shattered by shotgun pellets and BBs (often still in the bird's body). And often they were ferruginous hawks and barn owls, which don't eat chickens but feed on the rodents which are gorging on spilled grain or baby chicks.

Even bald eagles were shot at -- it amazes me that someone could brag about being a "proud American", while gunning down his own national symbol so eagerly! Another guy left out poisoned bait for an eagle ... it was too late for her, by the time someone brought her in, and she died in my arms.

One of my cats was recently found to have some bird shot in her. Since we've kept her exclusively indoors, it must have happened well before Christmas Day '97, when she came up to my mother-in-law's back door, crying and starving.

The cruelty of people towards animals never ceases to surprise and depress me. Yet, it also empowers me to do all I can to fight against it.

When Imhotep went in for his oral surgery (his teeth were so infected the doctor took them all out, thereby saving his life), the doctor discovered that the "cyst" in his ear was a BB and took it out. I still have it.

I was floored that anyone could be that psychotic. :grr: :mad:

28. Someone shot our dog with a BB gun when I was a kid.

He had run off, and when we found him, he had an open wound on one side - and the BB had lodged on the opposite side, right under the skin. Fortunately, he survived.

But really - I agree - what kind of lowlife scum runs around shooting small, defenseless animals??? They deserve a special place in hell. :grr:

she came into the house screaching...her rib cage is what prevented it from going deeper...it was written off by the cops at the time "boys will be boys"....kind of in the same vein as some people view "titty twisting"...

I can tell from the picture that she is a real sweet cat too. It's lucky for her that there is no permanent damage, but the asshole who did that to her needs their ass kicked. Give her a hug for me. Will ya, please? No cat deserves to be shot with pellets. Ouch.
