Observation about Phillip S. Hoffman's acceptance speech -- when

he mentioned his "love for NCAA basketball" it sure seemed like he was really saying "hey, hollywood, I may have just played a gay writer but I am still manly enough for those juicy heterosexual roles."

1. no, that was part of his tribute to his mom

he said "she took me to my first play and she stayed up with me to watch the NCAA Final Four and my obsessions became her obsessions."

Being raised by a single mother myself, I knew exactly what he meant. My mom would never have been particularly interested in the tourney before I came along, but I still remember her getting so excited during various final fours because I was into it and so she was into it too. Just like she used to memorize the names of the musicians in the bands I liked--not because she was into their music, but because she was into me being into stuff.

I found his speech quite moving, myself :)

Incidentally, hoffman got his original big screen break playing a gay character as well, in boogie nights (he made an ill-fated pass at the marky mark character) ...
