The Oscars could be a 2 hour show..fun and entertaining

the "viewing" audience only "cares" about a few awards.. the others are truly meaningful to the people who DO that job.., but for the rest of us..not so much..

adapted screenplay
original screenplay
cinematography
art direction'
editing
score
sound editing
sound mixing
visual effects

all of these should be added to the technical awards session, and the people nominated should be treated lavishly..banquet..music..speeches..film it..offer it as a dvd, so their friends families & coworkers could enjoy it later..


BUT..with these awards removed from the "main" ceremonies, it would allow for more time for the awards that the viewing audience care about.. The network could get a larger audience, and could still salvage the last hour of their regular evening schedule..and people would not be bored out of their gourds..

1. The show is a bloated monstrosity and lost my interest years ago.

I didn't even feel compelled to TIVO it this year despite the fact that I like Jon Stewart.

It NEEDS to be two hours.

Less stupid production numbers and parade of "lesser" awards.

But I guess the industry WANTS their nightlong circle jerk.

2. I totally disagree.

The categories you listed are what truly make the movie. If you take them out, all that's left is best picture, best director, best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress.

However, categories like "best foreign short film" and "best animated short" should be in the "tech" category.

4. Especially screenplays -- as a script writer, that irritates me

You wouldn't have the damn movie if it wasn't for the script! It's bad enough the DGA insists on the "A Movie by" credit for the director, but they have more clout than the WGA.

Show a little respect for the actual skeleton and flesh of the movie, please! Writers deserve more respect.

6. A bunch of options, sold a short script

So, I've made a little, although not quite enough for that WGA membership! No -- but I do have a legit producer that's turned into a VERY good contact, and he has some really biggies reading my last one, and someone at the Disney Channel and the Family Channel interested in the one I'm almost finished with.

Keep plugging -- and get a producer interested in YOU. They know everyone...

7. Congratulations.

I moved to L.A. four years ago, but I'm moving to NYC in a few months, though.

I've been working on this script on and off for that whole time, and it should be finally done by the end of the month. I'd be thrilled to even get my stuff optioned, let alone sold.

Of course, I was concerned that being in NYC might hurt my chances in the industry, but you seem to be doing well for yourself in Virginia.

And if I may ask, who's the producer you know?

10. I KNOW how important those things are to a movie, BUT

if they want the program televised AND to have viewing of it to not drop more, that's what they need to do to keep it a watchable amount of time..

This was the first one I have watched in about 4 years...but only because of Jon Stewart.. I watched the first few minutes when Whoopee hosted and when Chris hosted, but then switched to soemthing else..

The show is boring...most awards shows are...

When they started televising them it was because the public craved seeing movie stars, not sound editors or lighting directors..

Movies are made of many parts and they are all important...but the networks always whine about how people won;t watch.. It's TOO LONG..and most people "out there" only care about the acting and the best movie..and maybe the costumes & song..People with cable do actually get to see some of the foreign films and documentaries

Why was Tom Hanks cussing last night? I have heard all sorts of things, but I want to know for sure. I know they smacked him over the head with a musical instrument of some sort, but later he seemed pissed at Jon Stewart for something. I wish someone knew and would tell me. I couldn't wait to record the Academy Awards so I could zip through the crap. It usually took me about 15 minutes.
