Oprah responds when Meg Ryan asks "Are you bitter about you fame?"
March 06, 2006
Oprah Winfrey isn't a whiner

http://www.thesuperficial.com/archives/2006/03/06/oprah_winfrey_isnt_a_whiner.html

Meg Ryan, who has complained about the downside of fame, had her first interview in two years on Oprah last Wednesday and asked Oprah if she’s ever bitter about her fame.

"Oh, hell, no," Winfrey replied. "No?" asked Ryan. "Oh, absolutely not. Do you know, that would be absolutely impossible for me, because I was born a colored girl. I was born at a time in 1954 where to be colored in Mississippi was like against the law. And to have come from where I have come from to now be embittered because lots of people know you or like you, I would have to be totally, completely stupid."

1. I love Oprah
Sometimes she's annoying as hell, but she's generous, and smart, has a good head on her shoulders... and always, ALWAYS remembers where she came from... she has perspective.

2. That's one of the things that always bothers me about the Oprah
haters. They act as if she's some born-rich snob who doesn't care about any of us peons and that's simply not true. This is a woman who raised herself up from practically nothing to become a multi-billionaire, and she did it on her own. At a time when any woman, much less a black woman, could scarcely hope to reach those heights, She did it through her brains, business savvy, and force of will. She is truly a self-made person. Not to mention that she's incredibly generous with her own money and her Angel foundation. How can anyone possibly resent her for that?

3. I know -- but they do -- and on here, quite a bit
I've reads things on here like like: "Oh, so she gave five million dollars. So what. That's nothing when you have as much money as her." WTF? How about the Waltons, etc.? She gives millions and million and million back. And, if the woman wants to buy a$500 purse, I don't give a damn.

I'm not black, but to me, it always smacks of "let's keep the successful black woman down."

6. Yeah, there's a lot of Oprah haters here.
Don't know if it's because she's black, or a woman. But I don't see the same acrimony directed to Donald Trump.

8. Me, too. I really, really like her.
I think she will end up doing more to tell the Katrina story than all the MSM outlets combined.

She is an inspiration.

10. She had some serious live fill...
done to the her nasal folds -- looks hideous and completely changes the look of her face (and not in a good way).

13. Riiiight, big lips. That's what we should be fixating on WRT Ryan who
JUST ADOPTED A LITTLE GIRL FROM CHINA.

Y'all? I know anti-female sexism is more popular around these parts than ever, but FOR GOD'S SAKE. Maybe the most important thing about a woman, even a celebrity, ISN'T her physical appearance?

16. No, it 100% is in this case
Because Meg Ryan was a very attractive woman... cute, not stick thin, etc. Then, she literally distorted and destroyed her true self because of some horrible self image problems due to her career and the fact she was "aging." I think this is important, because so many women have done it! Priscilla Presley: beautiful woman, looks freakish now. Many other ones, and the young girls like Hillary Duff and Lindsay Lohan who destroy their health are the worst.

So... that is actually why I do talk about stuff like this. It bothers me, as an American woman, because these ideals are being transmitted to ourselves, our daughters, our nieces, etc.

14. Meg who???
Meg Ryan, who has complained about the downside of fame, had her first interview in two years on Oprah last Wednesday and asked Oprah if she’s ever bitter about her fame.

Two years since her last interview, and I'm sure an even longer gap till she's invited somewhere else for the next. Meg-what's-her-name-generic-blonde-who-can't-play-perky-young-things-anymore-and-isn't-a-good-enough-actress-to-transition-into-more-mature-roles won't have to worry about the "downside of fame" much longer.

15. Man, she's come a long way.
Those of you who watched Oprah between about '94 and '99 know that for a while there, she appeared entirely bitter about the pressures of fame, including those pressures affiliated with getting frivolously sued by assholes and idiots, (no, truly frivolously, not just Bill O'Liely frivolously) stalked, constantly harassed and mocked for sexist things like her weight, appearance and demeanor and relentlessly copied by other celebrities. She was really struggling there for a while. Does anyone remember those years when she used to invite old childhood friends to be in the studio audience and occasionally stop the show to "introduce" them (ie; passive-aggressively remind them of the times they made fun of her as kids)? There was some bitterness there, no doubt.

Nothing against Oprah, I really like her. And it's great that she seems so genuinely humble now, as if she has found a new comfort with her success, wealth and notoriety.

17. Good for Oprah! I might otherwise not really like her,
but she does remember where she came from, and she does give a lot of money away, and I can respect that.

And I'm glad that she isn't bitter over her fame. Not that there aren't good reasons for being bitter about fame, but I'm glad she isn't.

18. Of course I'd heard of Oprah...
...but I've never actually watched her show so I didn't have much of an opinion either way. This Saturday I saw her on a PBS documentary mini-series called African-American lives, though, and she really came across to me as a likable person. She was so moved and so full of joy at finding out about her family tree, it was impossible not to share in it and like her for it.
