Imagine that the government marks solemn occasions by burning the country's flag.

How would people demonstrate that they dislike that country?

Frankly, burning the flag is pretty dignified in comparison to what could be done to a flag.

black tape to the slogan on its flag as an optional official procedure for marking some solemn occasions?

The flag could say "BURN THIS FLAG ETC." and periodic amendments to flag handling regulations could elaborate on the "etc" part.

8. Well this game could go on forever then

and it wouldn't really be a very effective flag after a while. A flag has to be fairly simple, quickly recognizable and highly representative.

If the "etc" and the words on the flag just keep growing people would probably adopt some other symbol as a way to represent the nation for both patriotic and protest reasons. A bird, or structure anything like that it might even tend to lead to people using images of people in government more often than a nation with a more effective flag would.

Why burn a FLAG because of something the GOVERNMENT is doing? The flag is a symbol of that country's IDEALS, not a symbol of the leaders who violate those ideals...
