Encourage Brainshrub thread.
I've been working almost non-stop on a writing project for over 15 months straight. I don't want to mention the title because I don't want this to become a "Promote Brainshrub's Project" thread.

Anyways, I'm getting discouraged. I've put thousands of hours into this, and a years worth of savings... and all I've got to show for it is an empty bank account.

Frankly, I don't understand why I'm still doing it. It's like I'm being driven by a force I don't understand. It's not that I don't want to give up - I just can't.

To quote the Blues Brother's: "I'm on a mission from God."

Yet, if the Universe wants me to do this... WHY THE F*CK DO I HAVE TO BE SO BROKE ALL THE TIME??? You'd think an infinite universe could kick me an extra 50 grand a year.

Anyways, that's my rant.

So if you're God, (I'm convinced that God is a Duer.) could you please make me famous and rich? I deserve to be spoiled.

If you're not God, please encourage me in this thread.

1. Let me give you my version of encouragement:
I'm doing the same thing.

If I can do it, you can do it. The payoff of a completed project makes it all worthwhile.

6. But he was the Buddha. Are you?
also, you can never have enough character.

Just the fact that you think you have enough, says that you don't have enough.

Comprene?

9. Technicly, aren't we all the Buddha?
Isn't that the point? We are all supposed to be one right?

*sigh*

11. Yes, but only when we reach that level of enlightenment. Don't get me
wrong here; I am trying to be encouraging to you, and offering an opinion that you should not give up.

Just this week, for example, some web-based design / e-commerce software that I woorked on for three and a half years is FINALLY rolling out in its first implememtation. Until it does, I have ont made one cent on all that work.

But I'll tell you this: It would not have worked as well as it will now if I had gotten someone to pay for using it in the state that it was in two years (or even one year) ago. It's only recently that the last pieces of the puzzle have dropped into place to make it truly elegant.

Basically, this: If your project is worthwhile; it's worth the struggle. And even if it doesn't work out the way you had hoped, you will have learned something. And knowing somethig today that you didn't know yesterday is always a good thing to do.

Hang in there.

Redstone

(PS: I have some writing experience. If there's anything you want to bounce off me regarding your project, you can PM me with the assurance (stated here in fromt of 80,000 DUers) that it would be kept 100% confidential.)

8. You say you can't give up
Well, maybe there is something inside you that KNOWS what you are doing is important, and that something won't allow you to toss in the towel. "Mission from God?" Perhaps so.

My suggestion would be for you to maybe take a day or two off from your project, do something completely different, and give it a chance to percolate in the back of your mind and in your heart. I do that sometimes when I hit the wall on something, and if often works very well.

12. Take that "day or two off" at LEAST once a week. It's necessary.
Trust me.
