I am crying again!

One of our local news broadcasts ran an old tribute from a beloved (and deceased) news anchor about Kirby Puckett.

2. Kitchey, this has really gotten to you, hasn't it?
It's so amazing how people we've never met personally can touch us so deeply that we feel genuine grief at their passing.

4. I met him a few times
even though I went to Twins games as a child. before Kirby was a Twin, Kirby Puckett is truly the reason I am a rabid Twins fan today.

7. Wow. I admired Kirby so much
Yes, there were problems in his life, but good grief, who DOESN"T have some problems. And, that does NOT take away from his accomplishments in baseball, on and off the field. No wonder you are so sad.

8. even with his warts, he has quietly done so much for the community
He has a scholarship fund that sends underprivileged students to the U of MN. He used to run a 9 Ball tournament benefitting (IIRC) Cystic Fibrosis. In death he has donated his organs, in fact one of his kidneys is in Illinois, being tested to see if it is a match for a patient there.

15. I though Keith Olbermann did a nice job talking about him.
And I heard Ed Schultz on the radio today, talking about all the good things Kirby did. I was glad to hear these two do that, because I understand that some ESPN folks were dissing him (:grr: ).

I'd rather focus on the good people have done in their lives. And I was impressed with him for donating his organs.

14. My sense is that he will.
I have a gut feeling about him. I always felt that Red McCombs was a carpetbagger and was not about what is best for the Vikings.

18. Once I knew "Red" - how appropriate - was a used car salesman...
...from Texas, I never for once, thought he'd do shit with our team. However, I do have confidence in Zig. He seems to be a man of character, especially given his family's history.

Thank you very much...sounds like it is gonna be a great thing...

I've been trolling MLB.com to see if there is any word on it being televised. I don't see anything, so I emailed the Twins to see if they had any plans. It would be hard to believe they wouldn't at least televise it locally!!!

27. I hope so...
Oughtta be quite crowded, and I heard alot of ballplayers were gonna be there. I hear the Twins are letting most if not all the guys on the team now who knew him to skip training a few days.

I also see there is quite a makeshift memorial going up to Kirby at the Dome these last two days!

28. Yes there is
Apparently people have been bringing bobbleheads, signed homer hankies and other stuff that is of monetary value. Twins security is periodically clearing the stuff that is worth something, so it does not get destroyed or stolen.

31. That would be completely cool...
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 12:47 AM by SaveElmer
I despise corporate names on stadiums (one reason I like Camden Yards). I always thought a stadium named after Harmon Killebrew would have been great (he was my favorite player growing up), but no one, not even Killebrew I have to admit, had this kind of impact on Minnesota.

BTW: take a look at the front page story on the startribune site. They just put up a great story on Puckett, his relationship with his fiance, and how he had been able to mend his relationship with his ex-wife as well. Should put to bed some of the nasty comments we were hearing last night.

When Sandy Koufax goes, I'm gonna be devastated. It'll be like losing part of my childhood. Probably Willie Mays, too, even though he was the enemy.

33. Awww, I feel so bad for you.
I don't pay attention to sports as much as I used to. I do love baseball though. I remember watching Kirby play on tv when I was younger. He will be missed. Here is my best for you in this sad time. He was so young. My aunt is/was a big fan of his too. She's bummed more than she usually is. Her favorite comic, Richard Pryor died recently too. All the greats are dying. It can be too depressing at times, but we were lucky enough to have experienced them in our time. I try to look at the bright side anyhow.

Here's a big  for you. I wish I knew what to say or do to cheer you up.
