Coolest thing that happened in the last couple years was, we got to see Mrs. Squeech's ex take the oath of citizenship. He was a Brazilian, now he's a proud American, and certainly no Bushbot.

And then last year he married his own sweetie, another gay man (who happens to be Mrs. Squeech's dearest friend-- what a family we are), on Pride Day in Boston.

Naturalized citizens have an advantage: you guys have to study the American civic and political system to satisfy the INS, so you all know more about it than most of us native-born types.

Pre-9/11, they used to have Naturalization Ceremonies behind Independence Hall on the morning of July 4. I used to love to go down there and hear the speeches, and see all the beautiful faces - from white-blond Scandinavians to darkest Nigerians - all making our country richer in their own ways.

There was one Indian kid in a mohawk and funky double-breasted suit, and when he came back from getting his certificate, his tiny sari-clad mother grabbed it from him and wouldn't let him have it back.

An elderly Chinese man wanted me to take his photo with Mayor Rendell (now Gov. Rendell), and I got flustered, but Big Ed was really sweet about it, and told me to take a second one to be sure it turned out okay.
