You know - stuff about how many bug eggs can be found in my cereal or how killer bees with lazer rays attached to them are going to kill me in about 5 years.

I love that sort of stuff!

63. You must have heard about the supervolcano
under Yellowstone national park, that is due to go off any day now and, when it does, will obliterate much of the United States and make the rest uninhabitable and will probably kill billions of people by blotting out the sun's rays? Still, should sort global warming out, I suppose.

Reactivation of the western flood basalts

Something involving Mt Shasta and/or Shasta Dam destroying Northern California

Megathrust earthquake on the Cascadian Subduction zone followed by a tsunami

Meteor hitting the earth

Gulf Stream shutting down leading to a new ice age

(I'm spacing on the other three :( )

82. Oh geez
The Cascadian subduction zone is a fault that runs from Northern California up to British Columbia, and occasionally the whole thing moves producing bigger earthquakes than we've ever seen. We're talking 10+. We're talking 60+ feet of displacement. We're talking about a 1000 mile surface rupture, and the destruction of Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, and all the other cities big and small.

Good times. :D

26. Frankly, it just don't bother me any more.
I am convinced that we the people stopped the PNAC's "four wars in six years" program by taking to the streets and raising holy hell about the two wars they did (altho frankly I supported the Afghan invasion). Democracy ain't only about elections. It's about owning the government. No, not pw3ning the government... exercising our god-given control over its actions.

Petitioning for redress of grievances (if I may coin a phrase) is the soul of democracy, not voting. Hell, they vote in China. If the Democrats blow this one--and you're right, they just might--we can still kick up the dust and stop the worst of their schemes. We tear out our hair over Bush's big brotherism, but frankly things are a LOT better off than they would be if liberals didnt' make a stink.

7. I got dozens of 'em!
Never eat canned vegetables. US food standards allow a rather surprising number of rat droppings and insect parts in them. But the worst standards are for chocolate syrup.....

The genocide in Darfur is only getting worse. And moving into Chad. I recently read an account of soldiers in Darfur tearing infants out of their mothers' arms and throwing the live babies on bonfires. No link, because there are certain things you do NOT want in your head. Just knowing it is happening is enough - you don't want details. And the international community is doing sod all.

Britain and the US are major manufacturers and distributors of torture equipment. In violation of their own laws and international treaties. The governments of both countries turn a blind eye to this death trade. No, not exactly true... they actually facilitate it. So next time you read an Amnesty International report describing torture in a Third World country - and you want to cry and puke at the same time - remember your tax dollars helped pay for it.....

Now try to get a good night's sleep.....

37. Gelatin
Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals.

http://www.ivu.org/faq/gelatine.html

How are Marshmallows Made?

In the 19th century, marshmallows were made by mixing mallow root sap, egg whites and sugar into a fluffy mold. The French added cornstarch to help speed up the production and give the candy its unforgettable form.

Today the manufacturing of marshmallows is quite different. Mallow root sap has been replaced by gelatin. Corn syrup, starch, sugar and water are mixed with the gelatin. The fluffy mixture is piped through long tubes and then cut into equal pieces. To create shaped marshmallows like Peeps, a special nozzle moves back and forth to cut the marshmallow into recognizable shapes.

19. It takes a lye bath and temperatures over 700 degrees F to kill BSE prions
While that protocol is used on instruments for brain surgery, it's unheard of in slaughterhouses, butcher shops and restaurant food handling.

Less than one percent of the cattle slaughtered in the US are tested for BSE and they enter the food supply before the results come back.

Even if you never ate a scrap of meat in your life, you'd still be at some risk because of careless food handling and potential cross-contamination (one of the victims in the British outbreak was vegan.) If you get it, you get dementia and die painfully, there is no treatment or cure. Likely nobody'd every know what was the matter, as US dementia patients generally aren't tested for variant-CJD (the human equivalent of BSE/mad cow.)

I don't know if anybody else finds that scary, but it keeps me up nights.

And, this all started after flying about a year and a half ago and sitting in a coach seat for almost three hours It has been a fucking nightmare up until I found a really great allergist. I now have to be very aware of staying away from permethrin, its derivatives and especially malathion as in having close proximity and/or prolonged exposure.)

44. Our way of life is doomed and economic collapse is a near-certainty...
probably within a decade or so, give or take.

Petroleum is what drives the engine of the global economy, and at present, demand has almost caught up with available supply. Global production is 84 million barrels a day; global consumption is 82 million barrels a day (25% of which is in the US alone). Production has remained essentially flat for more than a year now, and output is likely to decline thanks to oilfield depletion. Once demand rises above availability, the price of a barrel of oil will spike above $100, and probably higher...you can expect to see gasoline at $10 a gallon; the cost of consumer goods will skyrocket, thanks to the fact that in the US everything is transported by truck and cost of shipping affects retail prices; and the house of cards that is the US economy will implode under the weight of massive debt defaults, unemployment on a scale not seen since the 1930's, and the collapse of the dollar as a global reserve currency thanks to the instability of the petroleum market.

There are also likely to be resource wars to ensure access to what's suddenly a VERY important and extremely expensive resource.

And it's all but certain that this is the course events are going to take; no amount of investment in alternative energy sources can replace oil, and we've waited too long to get a start on things to avoid what looks to be a tremendously unpleasant future.

Think that'll keep you up nights?

There's no stopping either one. The media told us. Oh yeah, and it will be Hillary vs. McCain, unless they get bird flu or lung cancer.

Your mouth is one of the liveliest parts of your whole body. More than 100,000,000 micro-creatures live there at any one time.

Hydrochloric acid in your stomach is so strong that it could eat up stainless steel razor blades.

If your body's natural defenses failed, the bacteria in your gut would consume you within 48 hours, literally eating you from the inside out.

Parasites count for 0.01% of your body weight.

Ear wax naturally dries up and forms little balls that drop out when we yawn, chew or swallow.

yeah, i'm a science and math geek.

71. a few more
Nearly a third of all bottled drinking water purchased in the US is contaminated with bacteria.

Rats multiply so quickly that in 18 months, two rats could have over 1 million descendents.

If you urinate when swimming in a South American river, you may encounter the candiru. Drawn to warmth, this tiny fish is known to follow a stream of urine to its source, swim inside the body, and flare it's barbed fins. It will remain firmly embedded in the flesh until surgically removed.

On a plane, if the passenger in your seat on the incoming flight had serious gas, then you are sitting on a cushion full of disease-causing microbes.

Four sunken nuclear submarines sit at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. One, a Russian sub resting in deep water off of Bermuda, holds 16 live nuclear warheads. Scientists and oceanographers are unsure what the impact of the escaping plutonium will have, but warn that corrosion could create the proper chemical environment for a massive nuclear chain reaction.

69. a story to keep you up a night
A woman who had recently visited South America, where she had safaried in local rainforest, began to experience severe pains in her left ear, accompanied by headaches, dizziness and constant rustling sounds, at first put down to tinnitis. It became so serious that exploratory surgery was required, which revealed that a spider which had become trapped in her ear. Eventually it had eaten through her eardrum and was living within the aural cavity. The rustling sounds were from the spider crawling around inside her skull. An egg sac was also removed. :wow:

70. Yellowstone is sitting on top of a giant super volcano and if it
erupts, it could wipe out life on the planet as we know it. In the past it has erupted on a schedule of about every 600,000 years. Scientists estimate that it has been about 640,000 years since the last eruption. Recent activity in the Yelowstone region indicates that the volcano may be becoming active again.

This is the one that made me stop watching disaster shows.

but I do know this: for every eyelash you have, there is a spider mite residing at the base of the lash. A little itty bitty thing, but it is alive and well and living just a fraction of an inch away from your eye. :)

Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 02:44 PM by brazenlyliberal
I'm not afraid of spiders, I'm just more aware than most people are of the true evil intent of the 8-legged beasts. It's not even the legs. I have a table with 8 legs and it's not evil. No, it's the 8 eyes. EIGHT EYES There's just no excuse for that.
