Do you know anyone who said "Never trust anyone over 30"?
And if so, do they not trust themselves now?

1. Nope. That was media baloney. We had
slanted reportage back then, too.

2. I think it was one of the 60's yippees--Abbie Hoffman or Jerry Rubin
And considering that the US was devouring its young by sending them to Vietnam, it had a kind of logic at the time.

3. And after Michael J Fox came along in the 1980's...
Abbie changed it to 'Don't trust anyone UNDER 30...'

6. The line actually came from the Beatles
I watched the interview. I believe that John made the statement, but I'm a bit fuzzy on the exact member.

As for the age line and trust, I figure that I shouldn't trust anyone who's breathing - PERIOD!

9. It really meant "anybody born before 1934"
It was a generation gap thing, not an age thing.

The idea was that anybody born before about 1934 was still seeing the world through the prism of the Depression and World War II and wasn't fully in touch with the way things had changed. It had a lot to do with television and also a lot to do with sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll.

These days, I have very mixed feelings about the whole business. The notion did have a certain validity -- there really was a generation gap, and there really was a "Something's happening here but you don't know what it is, do you, Mr. Jones" quality to the period.

But it was also very polarizing in a way that was ultimately poisonous and destructive.

And I believe it was one of the Free Speech Movement people at Berkeley who said it first -- Mario Savio maybe?
