FORT MYERS, Fla. — As many as 20 hall of famers could attend the public memorial service for Kirby Puckett at the Metrodome on Sunday night, Twins President Dave St. Peter said.
Dave Winfield, Eddie Murray, Ozzie Smith, Rod Carew, Harmon Killebrew and Paul Molitor are among those committed to attend what is expected to be a heartfelt celebration of their fellow hall of famer's life.
Future hall of famer Cal Ripken Jr. also is scheduled to attend the public service.


Carew, a Twins special assistant, wrote "34" on his cap. In 1995, Puckett made a similar gesture by writing Carew's jersey number on his cap to pay tribute to Carew's daughter Michelle, who had been diagnosed with leukemia. Before stepping into the batter's box in the sixth inning, former Twin Brian Buchanan, now with Cincinnati, walked down the third-base line and tapped his bat on the "34" that the grounds crew had spray-painted on the turf.
"That one kind of choked me up," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I thought that was a pretty nice thing by big Buck."
Flags were lowered to half-staff at the stadium. Longtime Twins television announcer Dick Bremer read a brief tribute to Puckett and a moment of silence was observed before the game, which the Twins lost 3-2 to the Reds. The grounds crew also painted a red "34" along the first-base line.
