God help me with this iPod!

We just got an iPod Nano and I can't get it to work. When plugged into the computer it just flashes a "Do not disconnect" message. Everytime I try to import a file, it won't take. The "update iPod" promt in the file menu is grayed out so I can't click on it. I have some podcasts I'm trying to put on it for a road trip we're taking this weekend, to make it more bearable. I'm ready to smash the thing.

If your iTunes is set to manual update then you have to update it by putting each file on the Nano by hand, and Update iPod will be grayed out. It sounds like it's set to manual update.

Sounds like a user error to me. ;)

7. Ok, back up a step:

Are you using iTunes? You should have a window open that says iTunes and you should be able to see the file there. And if her iPod is connected you should be able to see it in the left hand window. Then you can drag and drop it from the file name to the iPod itself. HTH.

4. Have you installed the drivers off the CD?

5. My daughter downloaded the CD that came with it in December

when she got her iPod for Christmas. I didn't know if I should re-load the CD if she already did. Although, her's is a regular basic iPod, mine is an iPod Nano.

8. Then you should probably reload wth the latest drivers

since there are two different models being used with this machine.

9. Try this:

In iTunes, click Edit: Preferences: Podcasts: iPod Preferences (you have to do this with your iPod connected)

I don't have my iPod here right now, so I can't do it, but I think it then asks you which podcasts you want to transfer to your iPod.

I had the same trouble with my Nano, and I had to set someting in those preferences. After that, the new podcasts download every time I sync up.

10. Here's what you do

Go to the iPod Preferences menu (on the mac version of itunes, its at the bottom left of itunes, a little pic of an ipod). Then, go to the music menu, and click "manually manage songs and playlists."

Then you should be able to just drag files onto the ipod.

again, this is for the mac version of itunes, but it should work for windows as well
