1. Have you used the Purge Command?
That will remove any unused blocks, layers, entities, etc.

4. You might want to try turning all of the layers on

and make sure they are all unlocked. Then delete any items you don't want. Make sure you zoom out all. Many times there are blocks that are embedded in other blocks, and there may also be layers that actually have entities in them.

BTW, what version are you using?

6. Layerwalk
After every thing is Thawed and On. Zoom extants to make sure there's nothing out in far off places and use the LayerWalk command to see what entities are on the offending layers. If I have a ghost layer that I can't find and just won't go away, I'll wblock the whole mess and then just rename it back to the drawing it was. Kind of a pain if you already have layouts and viewports set up.

8. That's what I do usually
Turn on everything you want to keep and wblock it into a new drawing.

3. Don't use AutoCAD but if it's anything like MAX
one thing you could try is giving everything you want to keep a meaningful name, then doing a Select By Name and grabbing everything that you don't recognize and deleting it.

5. Select all
And see if there are any hidden entities. Make sure all the layers are on.
