Has anyone here ever sold insurance for commission?

1. It's often a scam job.

A lot of companies make you an independent contractor so you're on your own except for the commission. Few people do well enough to support themselves, but you don't get paid unless you sell, so the company pumps through lots of people to get their volume.

The companies pay no benefits, little overhead, and you end up working your ass of 100 hours a week to keep your head above water.

There are some legitimate jobs selling insurance, but I wouldn't recommend it unless they provide at least a base salary and an office.

3. It's commission-only

I'm wavering between wanting to try it because it's better than nothing, and wanting to turn it down because I might go broke.

if it doesn't work out, you're spending all your time trying to sell instead of looking for another job. Then you're really in a lot of trouble.

The market research company has just had no work for me in over three weeks. If I attempt an insurance gig in the slow time, and fail, when work comes back in I"Ll have something to go back to...at least that's my reasoning.

4. I'm in sales but not insurance

The best advice I can give you is make sure you absolutely believe in your product be it insurance,cars or in my case advertising. It is damn hard to sell something if you yourself ar not a believer.

As for living off commission. It is feast or famine so during good months think ahead and always hold some back for emergencies. Sales is an area where you get what you put into it, the more you work usually the better you do but it takes discipline and focus.
