So I was in New York over a long weekend visiting a friend. I am from Texas (obviously). I walked into a stationer's.
The owners were studying up for their American naturalization exam. Another customer asked them about it, and then asked them to ask him some of the questions, saying, 'I bet I can answer most of 'em!'.
A few expected questions and answers followed.
'Who wrote the Star Spangled Banner?' 'Francis Scott Key.'
'Who was the first president of the United States?' 'George Washington.'
'Who is the current president of the United States?' The man hesitated a moment, so from behind a shelf, I popped up and yelled across the shop, 'Al Gore!'. Raucous laughter erupted, but, surprisingly, no applause. I imagine they would've been shocked, too, to know his remark came from a native Texas.
