"Enterprise" gets more and more anti-franchise
They're making more enemies than friends. So much for the Federation we see by the 23rd and later centuries.

They're more keen to beat everybody up and go against the morals they proclaim (sound familiar, folks? We all know Trek occasionally parallels society with its storylines or characters' actions...)

Many alien races seem bent on stealing from and/or killing them...

Every week, we also see Archer get turned into a bloody wussy pulp. Even Patrick Stewart couldn't do much with this role, nor I doubt he'd want it - and you'll recall he often complained during The Next Generation because Picard didn't get enough to do... (well, duh, TNG tried to be more realistic in its approach by letting Number One do the dangerous stuff, along with being a more complete ensemble piece in general, of course he's not going to get every shining moment! :eyes: )

It looks nice, sounds nice, but it sure as heck isn't "Star Trek" material, this new series...

Seeing how Berman's messed everything else up, how's he going to patch matters?

1. I have recently caught up
I've seen MANY good epsiodes this season, which has shocked me.

I don't know about this arc, but they believe they're going in search of these aliens to prevent the destruction of Earth, and that makes it believeable enough so far.

In terms of canon...it's a lost cause. Maybe they will salvage the situation. You see, all of this could have happened within canon yet no one ever talked about it in the previous incarnations. The Xindi are probably Fed4eration membe3rs in Kirk's time...who knows.

I do like that they're making Archer and Trip more pugnacious. The season has worked for me so far except the incessant usage of Jolene Blalock's body. Give it a rest!

4. I like the new show a lot,
but then I liked Voyager and even, DS9. As bad as most TV is, it's still an oasis.

5. Trek has always been sexist to a degree
Every Trek series has at least one regular female dressed in a tight, slinky dress or revealing outfit.

TOS is obvious. :-)

TNG had Troi, though in season 1 Crusher never wore her robe, revealing her rather slinky body... Season 1 also had miniskirts on the women...

DS9 had Kira in a tight outfit.

Voyager had 7'o'9 and maybe Kes...

Enterprise has T'Pol.

Apart from TNG season 1, we've never seen men in sexist outfits. (season 1 had men in minis, yummy...) Well, you could see one crewman's goodies in a scene in "Star Trek The Motion(less) Picture", but that doesn't really count...

Interesting point about a possible fate of the Xindi. There are possibilities, it's just too early to tell (and if they didn't have any secrets, nobody'd watch...)

23. But then again:
They call women 'Sir', and Voyager was commanded by a woman, plus we see multiple women captains and admirals.

Why is something sexist if there are women dressed a bit provocatevly, there are plenty of male 'studs' on the shows too (Kirk, Riker etc...)!

Notice that the women who don't look as good are still in high ranks.

2. Enterprise happens on an "Alternate Timeline"
Sorta like the "Earth II" and "Earth I" Universes in DC Comics. If a real Trekker ever got a hold of Berman's job, he or she could simply deny that Enterprise ever happened, and begin anew from scratch. Heck, you could even deny that DS9 and Voyager ever happened, and simply start a new timeline sometime after Star Trek: The Next Generation ended. That pretty much wipes out all of Berman's ruinous production post-Roddenberry.

6. Cool!
That would be nice, especially with how DS9 created plenty of new ways to travel in time to destroy credibility (kemosite and the Bajoran "obelisk of time" or whatever it was called in the tribble episode, just to name two) and how Voyager bashed the Kirk era (using a very lame excuse and featuring an ageless Tuvok, making me wish they had conjured up some more time travel nonsense...), amongst producing far more bad episodes than good ones. Voyager should have been a miniseries at best...

DS9 had its good moments, early season 4 and latter half of season 7 were rather good by Bermanese standards...

11. DS9
was the last show I watched. I haven't liked any of the new characters introduced since then except The Doctor, and the characters are what make the earlier shows.

17. I liked DS9
It was the last Trek I can really say that about.

DS9 had a lot of bad moments, however it had a lot of good moments too.

Voyager mostly sucked, mostly.

I still watched it though.

Enterprise OTOH is unwatchable IMO.

14.  I think enterprise is getting better and better..
It's the Xindi that are making enemies.. they want to destroy earth because we MIGHT in the future attack them..

Sounds familliar?

And also you have to remember, Starfleet is in a very early stage.. they don't even have the prime directive yet.

16. I've REALLY tried to like this show, but it quite frankly blows
1) The horrible Diane Warren 80s power ballad theme song, performed by an internationally acclaimed opera star impersonating--of all people--Rod Stewart.

2) Speaking of impersonators, the Australian Dick York lookalike who tries to pass for Tommy Lee Jones. At least, sometimes he sounds like Tommy Lee Jones; other times he sounds like Andy Griffith or Glen Campbell. His accent is like an audio tour south of the Mason-Dixon line. And this loser is supposed to be the "love interest" on the show.

3) I thought Bakula was great on Quantum Leap, but his character bites on this show. As someone mentioned, every week he gets the crap beat out of him, which is probably one reason why he walks around with a perpetually pained, constipated expression on his face. I don't think I've seen Captain Archer smile or have fun once on this show. But then I never care enough to stick around.

4) Thank God they are doing more with the Vulcan, who is the best character on the show. I think she should just get in a shuttlecraft and strike out on her own to explore space. I'd be a hell of a lot more interested in seeing that than watching Captain Constipated and his sidekick Tommy Lee Joe Bob mug their way through another encounter with the who-gives-a-sh** Xindi. Particularly if T'Pol's shuttlecraft had its own decontamination shower, and if she spent a lot of time on dirty planets.

5) One of the original hooks for this show was that life was supposed to be more mysterious, exciting, and dangerous for our fledgling space explorers. Even the transporter was a dangerous, untested technology. Well now trips through the transporter have been used as a plot device in several episodes, and we're right back to solving our problems, on a weekly basis, with outlandish techno-deus-ex-machinas that would make Geordi La Forge jealous, and he's not supposed to be born for several centuries.

For all the above reasons, and more, this show blows. As a Trek fan since toddlerhood, it pains me to say that, but let's face it. The spirit of fun, mystery, and adventure present in the original series and in the best episodes of TNG is completely gone. I think they've just plain run out of ideas.

18. archer appears to have lost his mind in recent episodes
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 09:15 AM by amazona
I think we are going to find out that they are not operating in the "real" timeline. There is something being set up here.

In a few episodes we have seen--

Archer denying safe asylum to a refugee and then blaming Trip for her suicide

Archer at least twice torturing a prisoner for information

Archer tells Trip's clone he will order him killed and used for "parts" to save Trip if the clone doesn't volunteer his life and his body parts

On earth in 2004 Archer has T-pol untie the kidnapper so he can beat him up without feeling guilty even though the kidnapper still has no opportunity to resist the beating

This is not the Captain Hornblower inspired starship captain of starships of old...this is more like an increasingly insane and obsessed Captain Ahab.

Nothing wrong with having an obsessed, crazed captain in a story, but it will be interesting to see if they can really handle this big of a theme or if they just end up sweeping it under the rug and trying to pretend his behavior is perfectly normal.

On edit, after reading other comments --
I'm not seeing the "wimp" complaint. Yes, Archer is a tad sentimental, but he is quite violent and irrational, in my view. Many obsessional madmen have a soft spot for sugary sentiment but I wouldn't call them "wussy," just ill.

19. Sorta like the year of hell in Voyager...
I forget exactly how, but they pretty much wrote off a whole year of the series with that year of hell storyline. Maybe they can do the same here?

21. I think it was just a two-parter
but, yes, they got rid of Janeway and B'Elannna's deaths, Tuvok's blindness, etc. by pressing the reset button.

It was one of the more elegant reset buttons of the series (which was, overall, pretty weak), but still contrived.

22. As a life long-loyal Trekkie
I do believe that Enterprise has degraded somewhat in quality.. THe plots aren't just as thick.

The older stuff, especially TNG was the best.

Ive always looked as ST as a liberal show, featuring a secular, liberal society (with morals, and lots of them I might add!), watching it since I was a child probably helped influence my political views.

Its a shame to see it lose its quality, but it is still pretty good.

-End rant

Rick Berman must be canned. Now. While the franchise carries any credibility whatsoever.
