35. having watched/read over time
its not quite like a 'fessed up' ala a freeper outing himself - but a manifestation of extreme frustration. Walt has often waivered between ABB vs wanting dems to be a real opposition party - am guessing this was more an expression of that same frustration (the old "the party left me") but I would also guess that in the end, as has been the case before - he wants repubs out more than anything and would work for that goal.

I just say this b/c it is misleading to think of this as an "outing" (ala when a freeper disruptor shows himself) but a symbol of how frustrated some folks are getting (not at DU perse but it manifests itself here) due to a feeling of powerlessness at stopping bushco and the GOP one-party rule system.

I suspect we will see many other long-timers hit that point and go over the line (as we have seen many times) as we run up to the next elections - and I will continue to have some empathy for them as I don't think it is that these folks want to see repubs win - I think it is an expression of fear that the repubs will win (ala that the current debate leading to whatever personal implosion will lead to repub win). In short it is an argument about strategy of ending this regime - rather than an enemy within thing. Our anger is so palpable that we have taken strategy debates to turning on each other.

That said - his post really didn't give Skinner any alternatives.

17. I know the feeling he had...
I went the same way after the 1988 election...got so fed up with losing I decided to become activist on several semi-fringe issues (animal rights...I even contributed to PETA), I refused to vote for anyone who did not live up to my new standards, wrote in candidates. Just all out of frustration. I realized before long what a waste of time that was as I was having no impact at all. I still care about those issues now, but realize basically checking out of the political process was not the way to go!

49. That's EXACTLY what I did, too
I worked for Dukakis during the MN caucuses, and was really pissed off the way he carried himself after the nomination (which Kerry seemed to mirror in 2004, sadly enough). I dropped mainstream politics for awhile, with the exception of the 1990 Wellstone campaign, which I really believed in.

After 1992, I retired from party politics. Clinton really pissed me off, as did the 1994 elections. But after 2000, I got back in.

I can understand Walt's frustration, but I have to admit that is one of the funnier TSs I've seen in awhile. I imagine he'll pop up on that Deanocratic site eventually-- if he's not there already.

32. I find it sad
and indicative of how high anger and frustration has grown in the past four years that I have been here. Peoples' frustration spike and in a fit of political anger cross lines ... as we move towards primaries, general midterm elections - and then towards another presidential campaign - I am certain we will see more and more folks implode per their DU membership. I don't find it particularly funny. I get mocking the whole "Swan Song/Good bye" DU threads. This, however, is different. Agree or not with this or other posters who have gone this way, what strikes me as sad is bigger than DU - it is a relic of the deep fear and anger felt over the direction of this country and the powerlessness we have in doing much about it - and as a result more hyperbolic rhetoric gets fuelled and stoked and eventually self-defeats (in terms of going over the line leading to leaving DU.)

just my two cents.

65. I do, too. I think all of us have our breaking point.
I've reached mine before and at that point, writing a "fuck-you-go-ahead-and-ban-me" post was the least of my worries. You don't necessarily know the whole story of why Mr. Starr imploded. Based on outward actions, he was asking for it (literally and figuratively), but a whole lot more could be going on.

Yeah, it's a funny thread, but it could mean something a lot more ominous. Having gone through some severe shit, I have a hard time laughing at someone else's misfortune--at least in this instance. I guess it reminds me too much of reaching that breaking point. I have no idea whether or not Walt Starr has reached a breaking point. Maybe I'm just projecting.

Having been here a long time just as you have...seeing a long time poster flair up and ask for a tombstone is sad.

The frustrations are just so great sometimes it comes out as trashing on ones own family...

I imagine he will be reinstated after a "cooling off." If he wants it..but know he's been frustrated for a long time. I think the Alito vote was the last straw for many old timers on DU. I notice many names missing these days.

I may not have always agreed with him, but hell, I don't completely agree with anyone. Independents and Greens post openly here. There are rules about not actively trying to undermine the Democratic Party, but progressive voices of all kinds are welcomed.

Still, the results of daring the owner of a website to tombstone you should be pretty obvious. I'm certainly not second-guessing Skinner. (Honest, Skinner. DON'T tombstone me, please. :) )

I think my mother might be snowed in for awhile, yet. There are eighteen inches at her place. She has a four-wheel-drive, but there's about a mile of gravel road before she gets to a paved one. Besides, it's dangerous braving the roads when other folks don't have chains or 4X4s. I'm staying put for awhile, myself.

216. I think we should worry more about our Constitution
than about partisan considerations. Our Constitution and our freedoms are under assault across the board. This is obvious even to old fashioned conservatives that have become alarmed at Bush's power grab. Our frustration comes from the inability and unwillingness of many of our elected representatives to defend the Constitution they took an oath to defend.

The Republic lies mortally wounded at our feet while the "opposition" party recoils at the thought of voting for a censure motion in the Senate, or to hold hearings in the House about the Downing Street memos.

Our Republic is dying a bipartisan death!

27. I agree with you... I enjoyed reading Walt's threads.
But, he changed over time... As many here have. I've accepted
the fact I'm never going to change anyone's mind by posting on
DU. (If I ever have, it was an accident) The most I can do is
post the truth of an issue the way I see it. I can't make people
agree... and that is where people like Walt fail. They passionately
believe what they believe and they see the truth in it. Nothing
wrong with that... But, then they go out trying to change minds.
There is where the trouble starts.

Politics and public opinion are a game of patience.

38. definitely a loose cannon
love him or hate him - he has been interesting to watch/read as his levels of political frustration were visible. I think many of us have felt the same frustration at one point or another - in terms of frustration not only with bushco but with what we can do (centrists blame progressives and feel attacked and progressives blame centrists and feel attacked). I look at the 'going over the line' as a harbinger of spiking political frustration that is going to only spike further and further in the upcoming months - Walt has always been a wee bit hyperbolic - but I think that his spikes of frustration and enthusiasm are a good measure (as they read to be a bit more amplified in size than many of us) of that which many Duers will express in the coming months. This is no comment or critique about DU - but a comment and critique of the heightened sense of danger and fear that the strategies or candidates chosen will lead to more years of bush/GOP dominated govt and all that is entailed by such a prospect.

I saw a thread he posted late last night. Regardless, I remember thinking, this thread may explode because it's late, but it'll be locked, and at least one person is going to end up really pissed.

I agree Matcom, that was a great way to go out.
But , SHIT.

Walt Starr meant a LOT to this site, and in many ways exemplified the fighting progressive on the fringe of the Democratic Party. Like many of us, he wants to take it to these bastards, and is growing increasingly impatient with the bullshit in DC. I'll miss him. He served to enlighten and inform me on more than one occasion, and as a party exofficio in extemis I annoyed him more than once myself.

Never forget if you ask Skinner to tombstone you, he'll oblige.

Jesus, that fucker was whiny. I remember during the primaries, he switched candidate loyalties every five minutes, and for the flimsiest of reasons. Every post had a breathless whiny panic about it, as if his opinion was the supreme writ of DU. And for GD, that is saying something.

Good riddance. He was worse than a troll.

153. I remember one of his posts was about w and his congressional ads
Walt proved that Bush had wore fake military honors and metals while posing for pictures in his campaign literature. Walt went through decades of political propaganda, and foil'ed military documents that proved what Bush did was illegal.

I was amazed by his ability to seek out info.

I often wonder if Bukowski, Hunter Thompson, or other great minds would be able to survive in DU without ending up tombstoned. How long would Michael Moore last?

159. His own quote of several years ago summed him up nicely:
"You know, I could run for governor but I'm basically a media creation. I've never done anything. I've worked for my dad. I worked in the oil business. But that's not the kind of profile you have to have to get elected to public office."

208. (* quote in context:) George W. Bush
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 06:16 PM by BikeWriter
While he lobbied franchise owners for support, Republican party officials kept trying to convince Bush that he ought to run for office. George talked it over with one of his oldest friends, Roland Betts. When Bush was Yale chapter president of Delta Kappa Epsilon, Betts served as DKE's rush chairman. And they had both been investors in Spectrum 7. Now they were both partners in the Texas Rangers. According to the book Fortunate Son, Bush confided to his friend:
"You know, I could run for governor but I'm basically a media creation. I've never done anything. I've worked for my dad. I worked in the oil business. But that's not the kind of profile you have to have to get elected to public office."
Several months later, it become clear that somebody else was going to become baseball commissioner. So he finally acquiesced to running for governor.

I posted these long-winded and earnest essays in GD... for the first half year or so.

But that only went so far until they fell like bricks and it became rather masturbatory to continue.

Then I came into the Lounge to lighten up and talk music.

Then my posts in GD became more like drive-bys than analyses.

Then the yaks came.

But since the 2004 election, the whole atmosphere went wrong. A whole flux of trolls and narcissists poisoned both forums.

161. Walt is the guy who coined the term "Enronomics" WP used it in his book
"The Greatest Sedition Is Silence." and he credited Walt for it. (WP is a Will Pitt, for any newbies)

I didn't agree with Walt on some things. Especially last summer over the Roberts nomination, he said something about how Red-State Dems facing reelection soon should vote for Roberts etc, and that when Dems eventually get power they can nominate someone to counter him and so on. I saw similar arguments like that at the time. Selling women's rights out, essentially for a political strategy that might..I stress MIGHT eventually win back Congress. It was all dubious. I also remember he refused to vote for any candidate in the GE who voted for the Iraq war resolution. I didn't agree with that, as I think voting for somebody who is running against Bush trumped any supposed moral stand. But, Walt is a smart guy, some people didn't like him, I never really had any run ins with him or anything. Just a few replies to comments that I didn't agree with. Each time we were civil and articulated our positions pretty well, that I recall. That's too bad, I respected him a lot.

212. he said that?
see, morally, I just could never advocate an action like that. People try to justify it in many ways, I have never heard one that isn't morally dubious. Some advocates of actions such as bombing Hiroshima or say even voting for Roberts for a political strategy, they get all condescending and play the "well, I'm a realist" card. In the end, I find people like that are weak on positions and issues which genuinely matter. They aren't true fighters for what is right, due to their willingness to play politics with meaningful issues, you know?

As much as I get irritated by Democrats, I won't throw my vote away on a 3rd party candidate.

Of course, I don't live in one of the "Safe" Blue States. Voting Democratic in Texas is often a lost cause. But voting 3rd Party is Bad Performance Art.

unless you are one of the DUers who appreciated what he had to say.

It really has nothing to do with 3rd party candidates; it's just a matter of civility. There are many people who have common goals with Democrats who are not fans of parties or party politics. To them, the whole political arena isn't about parties, but about issues. Since we have common goals, I consider it a better practice to work together on those commonalities than to restrict courtesy to the party purists only.
