PETA protester bares skin, attracts attention downtown (Lansing MI)
I work a block away from where this took place. My brother works on the block directly across the street. Said brother did not alert me of this when it happened. Brother got a well deserved slap across his bald head when I learned of it later.

when it was quite a bit colder.

I really hope she doesn't get an itch somewhere.

44. they did a similar stunt in Iowa back in 1999
It made the papers again, and again, and again, as people kept talking about it - of course you need to show the picture again so people know what you are talking about.
Not the same girl, as far as I can tell, but quite similar in pulchritude. I wonder how many like that are in the organization. It seems to me they could make alot of money with some calendar sales :hide:

6. Oh, yuck, that's jailbait!!!!!!!
BTW: Since animal poo is used to fertilize vegetables, is it truly possible to go Vegan (though the attempt, in theory, is quite noble)?

13. Some plants are grown in composted vegetable matter
but composting animal feces and using it as fertilizer keeps it out of wastewater and does no further harm to the animal.

Since veganism is about preventing animal suffering as opposed to maintianing some illusion of purity from the taint of animal exploitation, I don't see that it's an issue. (Just my opinion, though.)

25. But another train of thought states Veganism is about having nothing to do
with any part of an animal, directly or otherwise.

Therefore, the cowpie fertilizer becomes relevant.

(still, that's all my mindset and we know I've lived something of a sheltered life... :) This summer, I knw of a festival where the Vegan folks put up a stand. I will be sure to learn more to have my facts in proper order.)

27. There is a small movement toward veganic gardening
but as that isn't really an option most places, let alone widely available enough that one could base thier diet around it, it's really not a practical option for most people.

Veganism means avioding animal products when it's not impossible to do so. There's really no way most people can avoid veggies grown in poo, tires (which contain stearic acid from animal fat,) etc. We do the best we can and work to create more options. It gets easier as time goes on and more animal-free alternatives are available.

28. No vegan I know takes it to the "fertilizer" level.
Bugs are killed when crops are harvested (or when any pesticide or predatory animal is introduced). A vegan taking it to that level wouldn't be able to drive a car, ride a bike, have electricity, etc. That's a Level 9 SuperVegan, and they haven't been around since the the great "Bacteria Have Rights, Too" wars of 1833.

Thursday night I went to my niece's choir concert and some of the kids were wearing shorts/skirts.

Friday was a little cooler so the PETA lady was probably slightly chilly.

Today we may see a high of 64 although it's pretty damn wet right now.

She looks healthy to me. All the vegetarians I know look healthy as well.

The fact is that most people who DO eat meat don't get enough vitamins and nutrients they need and have to supplement their diet with vitamin pills. If vegetarians have to do the same, then so what? What's the difference? Why don't you go harp on non-vegetarians about deficiencies in their diets?

55. you must not know many vegetarians
it is a sad reality that a certain proportion of the eating disordered, and esp. young girls, use the excuse of veganism or vegetarianism to conceal the fact that they aren't eating at all

your claim that ALL vegetarians you know are healthy is suspect, vegetarians like any other large class have people who are healthy and people who are unhealthy

how much hair does she have to lose before you can see the problem?

there is nothing wrong w. a slim build, there is very much something wrong w. restricting diet so severely that your hair starts coming out in patches

not all anorexics/bulimics get down to 60 pounds before they become severely ill, there are even a few who are (and this is funny to type but tis true) a little pudgy, it's the alternating binging and purging in their case which destroys their hearts

being a diet nut is all fun & games until somebody gets killed

58. Those are a lot of assumptions
You're observation on her hair is an opinion, which I don't share. I don't see any evidence of her losing "patches" of hair. You're making a big assumption, without basis, that this person has an eating disorder.

Maybe you're hung up on this accusation that vegetarians have an eating disorder because you have had this problem yourself or know people who have. However, suggesting that any female vegetarian you see a picture of has an eating disorder is unfair, unrealistic and unfounded. Vegetarianism is about eating healthy. There's no good reason to make gross generalizations about vegetarians having an eating disorder. I have been healthiest at those times when I cut meat out of my diet and yes, all the vegetarians I know have said the same thing or else they probably wouldn't be vegetarians.

79. half of what you're saying here is true.
Yes, a fair number of eating disordered girls use veganism/vegetarianism as a guise, an excuse to not eat certain high-calorie foods.

Yes, not all anorexics/bulimics get down to 60 pounds before they become extremely ill. Some are indeed pudgy.

No, promoting a veggie/vegan diet is not the same as promoting eating disorders.

No, the girl's hair doesn't appear to be falling out. Her roots are lighter, she probably dyed her hair.

HOW DO YOU HAVE ANY WAY OF KNOWING WHETHER THIS GIRL IS EATING DISORDERED OR NOT? The fact is - you don't. And assumptions are rather ridiculous, esp. because the pallor of her skin is not that of someone who has been suffering with a major eating disorder, nor is her hair weak and limp like most hair gets after it is being denied nutrients. Do a little more research or have a little more experience with the shit you're talking about before you start trying to preach, please.

57. She has a stringy, light brown scalp?
Edited on Sun Mar-12-06 02:04 PM by LeftyMom
I guess you'll see what you want, but if you look at the piece of hair over her ear it's very obvious that her dye is growing out and what you're seeing is lighter roots.

Women who are going bald tend to thin out all over rather than get bald spots, anyhow. As a result, it's generally most visible in terms of thin or flat hair or being able to see back into the scalp in raised hairstyles (I know the look well, my mother has very thin hair as a result of a medical condition. She is, for the record, an omnivore.)

60. No; LeftyMom is correct.

The young lady's hair color is naturally light brown and she dyed it darker brown. The naturally light brown color growing out on her scalp is what you see as the "broad part" of a balding person. However, if you compare the (natural) color of her eyebrow hair to the hair on her scalp, you will see that same naturally lighter brown color as it is growing out on her scalp.

If this young lady was balding due to a protein deficiency, her hair would be frizzy due to weakened strands breaking off and falling out, and short new ones growing in. But her hair is sleek and full and strong enough for a nice ponytail.

This young lady is the picture of health.

P.S. Instead of fighting about it, don't take my word for it either. Take this photo to your hairdresser and ask him/her.

Edit: clarity.

87. my head looks the same way
i don't have an eating disorder and i do eat meat.

but i have naturally fine straight hair probably similar to the girl in the pic. and i have dark hair against a lighter scalp. so it tends to show a lot through the parts in my hair.
