It undermines any attempt at sarcasm by obnoxiously spelling it out. It's like telling a joke and posting the word "FUNNY". It's just stupid. Have a little more faith in others. They'll get your "sarcasm"without you telegraphing it. And if not, they weren't going to get it anyway.

7. I agree, for SOME of the same reasons. |

While I have seen first hand that there is a real NEED for a smiley which symbolizes "sarcasm", the one we currently have is just lame.
It's not even a smiley, it's just the WORD- totally lame! And dripping crimson? How does that say "sarcasm"?
Not to mention that I can type the WORD in less time than it takes to drop in the smiley.

Communication via the internets is not as clear as in actual speach, and folk don't always know each other well enough here to realise the sarcasm.
For example - a couple of months ago there was a thread (in the Lounge even) which had some reference to homosexuality. I posted a semi-humerous reply to it repeating the inane drivellings of FReepers about it being a choice &c.&c. - a couple of people who don't know me well enough, and definitely don't know that I'm gay read it and assumed that I was making a genuine attack on gay folk - thus causing trouble. Had I bothered to add the :sarcasm: then there wouldn't have been any problems.

I have had posts that I didn't use it on and would say something like : "georgie bush rawks!!!!", and I will still get some people who think I am serious.
There are some people who aren't built for understanding sarcasm. It's not their fault, they just think on different lines.
