The new face of Bettie Page
Gretchen Mol portrays the iconic pin-up in "The Notorious Bettie Page," set for release on April 14.

Not too bad a match.

The film also stars Steppenwolf Theater alumni Jared Harris as fetish photographer Irving Klaw; Lili Taylor as Klaw's half-sister; David Strathairn as Estes Kefauver, the Tennessee senator whose Senate investigation into the influence of pornography on juvenile delinquency helped put the Klaws - and Bettie - out of business; and Jared Harris as British bondage illustrator/photographer John Willie.

Bettie Page herself recently made a rare public appearance to autograph some of her famous photos in advance of her bio-pic's release. Her post-pin-up life has been low-key and conventional (as was her life prior to modeling, for that matter); she has refused to be photographed despite her enduring popularity, maintaining that she prefers to be remembered as she was. Ms. Page is 82.

1. Not bad, but Bettie had a bit more meat on her.
More like a real woman. I'd like to see it truer to life:

6. I dunno
to me, that second photo is awful--to see her ribcage like that, it's positively disgusting, like looking at an anorexic.

10. Oh for the days when looking anorexic wasn't considered sexy
And looking like a real flesh and blood woman WAS sexy. Not saying that everyone thinks thin/slender is sexy, but it still seems to be the norm set for our culture. Being a woman with curves, women like Bettie are da bomb!

18. A "real woman"?
Some women are naturally thinner than others. :)

19. Oh I know. I didn't mean there was anything wrong with being
slender. One of my sisters is that way naturally. I meant the emphasis placed on being thin that this society has, as if having curves was somehow wrong. Sorry if what I said came out wrong. I just think that there shouldn't be one standard for what's attractive or sexy that applies to everyone.

20. Oh I got it
And I'm probably overly sensitive about it. And I agree with you totally; if we as a society are going to be so vocal in our appreciation of appearance we should be all-encompassing.

(I certainly butchered that sentence in an attempt not to offend. ;) )

2. The LATimes article is here
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-bettie11mar11,0,4194244.story?coll=la-home-headlines

...

For the last 13 years, she's been living in seclusion in various Southern California communities. Nearly five decades after the last photos of her appeared in magazines like Chicks and Chuckles, Page is finally earning a respectable income for her work.

"I'm more famous now than I was in the 1950s," she said.

...

Page needed about a minute to get through the 10 letters of her name. As she pushed her pen, she reflected on her life and faith and work.

"Being in the nude isn't a disgrace unless you're being promiscuous about it," she said. She added with a laugh, "After all, when God created Adam and Eve, they were stark naked. And in the Garden of Eden, God was probably naked as a jaybird too!"

12. Heya
:hi:

It sounds good, doesn't it. I didn't realize why she stopped modeling until I visited the site and read the synopsis.

I read on IMBD that this was produced for HBO, so maybe lazy people like me 'n the Mag will be able to stay home to watch. :)

(Correction to my original post: it's Chris Bauer who plays Irving Klaw - not Jared Harris, who plays John Willie.)

17. Oh, I'm glad to hear that
Due to my various pains I really don't go out to see movies and often wait for them to come out on DVD or cable, so I'm glad... I won't even have to wait! :D :hi:

13. Good choices
I was a little girl the first time I saw Julie Newmar - in My Living Doll, a very dumb, short-lived sitcom. I saw her and thought, "Okay, that's what I want to look like when I grow up!" (Didn't. ;))

I was much, much, much older the first time I saw Bettie Page.

16. She looks like she may have the face for the part...
(or at least close enough), but she doesn't QUITE have the hips for it. She looks to be abou 20-25 pounds less voluptuous than Ms. Page in her prime...(although I can understand that gaining the weight might be a problem, , as it may not end up being distributed quite so felicitously).
