Cool Jazz is in fact cool; Cool is Brubeck, Stan Getz, Modern Jazz Quartet. Smooth is assgoobers like Spyro Gyra, Lee Ritenour, and Kenny G.

50. You can really classify most jazz as "jazz," without qualifying it.
(Except for smooth "jazz" musak--a guaranteed way to piss off any musician of any genre is to treat it as a sublet of jazz, when it reality it's just---musak. :puke:)

There is, however, swing and Big Band stuff, cool jazz, etc., etc., etc. But in a general context, just talking lightly about it, qualifying it so can be seen as splitting hairs.

54. I feel so "hep"
I've never liked Kenny G type jazz, and always felt like a musical nerd of some sort for not liking "jazz". I did not know that was not "deemed" jazz, like Charlie Parker jazz. Good to know, should I ever manage to get out of this hobunk town and go somewhere, I wouldn't want to have a big evening out ruined by stumbling into a "smooth jazz" factory.

40. Kind of Blue is modal jazz
Birth of the Cool is cool jazz.

Sorry to be pendantic, but I worship at the altar of Miles. Gerry Mulligan is the quintessential cool jazz artist.

Kenny G, on the other hand, needs to replace that soprano with a loaded .45 and do us all a favor.

45. LOL yes.
That would be a great favor indeed. :D

Kind of Blue is indeed modal jazz, and the very best of modal--really quite the best of any jazz, dear Miles. I have also, however, heard it described as having "cool jazz undertones" or something to that nature--I'm not even sure where I got that from, but it was recently, and it stuck in my head. It's probably not even true. Damn memory of mine... Keeps both the true and the untrue.

I'm so sorry about the mishap--I should have specified better, or just not have said anything at all. The latter would probably have been a better choice.

:blush::blush:

Forgive me, Miles!

:D

62. Oh now SeattleGirl there is definitely some good
death metal/metalcore out there. It really helps me to excorcise some demons blow off some steam. The term "death" metal really gives it a bad connotation. I suppose if the bands all sang about death and destruction, it would fit and while many groups do talk about some violent subjects it is not the all encompassing theme that pervades all "death" metal. But yeah, I sometimes want to throw things too while listening. :)

Take the worst elements of current pop and country music, throw in an accordion, write Spanish lyrics, and then you have the nature of the curse.

and even though it is popular in Northern Mexico and the Southwest it is not typical of traditional Mexican music. There are much better standard bearers for music coming out of Mexico such as Caifanes/Jaguares, Maná, Kinky, Plastillina Mosh, Café Tacuba just to name a few.

DU only lets you vote once in a poll.

I was so hoping that rap would be a dead fad like disco is now. Sad as it is to say, I'd rather listen to an hour of disco and an hour of C&W combined than ten minutes of rap.

I'd rather listen to "We Built This City" ten times in a row than ten minutes of rap. THAT'S how much I hate it.

I can't agree with any of your choices, in so much as I find redeeming music in virutally an genre. In fact the one genre that I find the least amount of good music in is death metal, but there are a few gems contained within.

I guess I just have broad-based tastes in music, and rule nothing out:shrug:
