Why did you pick your name?
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 12:37 AM by MrScorpio
We have a lot a new folks. We all have a story to tell.

Mine should be obvious.

I'm a guy (duh) and I was born on 27 Oct. Same date as Teddy R. (The LAST Republican I'll ever respect) and I'm a Scorpio through and through.

I like shoot-em ups and sci-fi flicks. But will cuddle up with a honey to watch a beat-down wife exact her revenge on Lifetime.

I make a pretty mean cheesecake and will drive miles and miles for some bomb-ass Turkish food.

I love art, music and walks in the park.

I have ALL of my original hair and I have four (count 'em) nipples.

If you want to get me a Christmas present, a gonzo porn DVD collection is a sure fire winner. A free lapdance comes in a close second.

Most of all, I like to make the ladies scream. (Hence the collection of restraining orders)

But, except for the fact that I'm married, I make a really good catch.

So. Let me ask you: You love DU much as I do? Tell your story and let us know.

Mr Scorpio
Certified Love Machine

5. Mine's probably not what you think
Edited on Thu Dec-04-03 12:36 AM by alphafemale
We first got on-line as a family (with A-Oh-Hell at that point) about the same time the wolves were re-introduced to Yellowstone.

We were also as a family already very much enamored of wolves.

And we all took "wolfish names." Mine originally meant to us "mama and protector."

But the name soon became great fun because Right-wingers couldn't stand my screenname.

I'll never change it now.

edit: typo

6. I found out shortly after picking "progrocker69"
that 69 is almost universally taken as a sexual innuendo on the net. I love progressive rock but I am certainly not trying to make any overt statements with the 69 part. It's just that I was born in 1969. I used to use pisces69 but that was already taken so often that I gave up and changed it, and it's been my user name of choice for over two years.

9. I always want to know....
....in political discussions, anyway:

1. Where the person is from.
2. Their gender.
3. What they do for a living.

This information helps me step into their shoes, so to speak, and try to understand their perspective better.

So, I picked a name that tells all three of those things about me.

14. Long-ish story. Bear with me.
I'm a sax player. For a lot of years, I did nothing else to make a living. One day, I got a call from a bar owner. EC Scott was playing a local venue, and her "regular" sax guy had gotten into an accident. EC let the owner know that her band wouldn't be at full capacity that night, and he suggested a local guy (me) to fill in. It went amazingly well that night. EC introduced me after a solo, but didn't remember my name; she only remembered that it began with the letter 'J'. So she said "Give it up for....for....J....um..."Blue" Jay!"

A number of my friends were there, so it just kinda stuck.

I ended up touring with her for a few weeks until her regular guy was ready to go again.

An aside for blues fans: Listen to EC Scott. She's on the Blind Pig label, and kicks ass.

I think Catch-22 is one of THE greatest novels ever written. My grandpa tried to get me to read it when I was about 12, but I just didn't "get" it. It wasn't until college that I learned how good this book is. Of course the "Dem" part of Catch22Dem just made sense. :)

26. My name picked me ;-) Hello to all the newbies posting in this thread :-)
During the 2000 campaign when Al Gore was on Letterman, Dave asked a policy question (having to do with Social Security, iirc) and Al said "Oh, Dave, you're such a wonk." before answering.

I'd also been using this as a registered handle in the CNN irc chatroom well before that anyway, in the days before CNN took down their irc chat. I got quoted on air roughly three hundred times on various programs like Talkback Live and The Spin Zone when they used to do that.

Anyway, when I decided to register on DU it was the first handle I tried, and nobody else had taken it yet, so here I am.

http://xenon.xe.net/inthumor/

Pretty long explanation for such a short handle, I guess...

Btw, MrScorpio, for some reason I'd assumed you were making a Simpsons reference

Thanks for the thread. It's been awhile since we've done one of these.

And the character of Random Koolzip on the album "In the Next World, You're on your Own" has some great lines, like: "tell it to the Xmas bunny, kid!"

And because it is sufficiently obscure enough to confuse the uninitiated, and sufficiently well-known enough to delight those on the "inside."

I am a Scorpio too. 11/9/63

"guitarman" seemed a little plain and obviuos,so I shortened it up a little.

I've played guitar virtually all my life,so it just seemed natural.Played on and off the road with some of the best musicians you've never heard of in dance halls, roadhouses, dives and gin joints.(beer joints too) I am working on building up a studio business and working a day gig now.

Haven't had the chance to do the famous thing yet,but it sure has been a blast so far.

My hobbies include blazing a fatty and babbling incoherently on the internet, blazing a fatty and detailing my car, blazing a fatty and gettin' my freak on,and blazing a fatty and drinking beer.(JK)

Peace out and a big welcome to all the newbies :)

.....waiy a minute....am I still a newbie?.....hell I don't know...oops,babbling again..........

41. see the first three words to this song . . .
MY RAINBOW RACE
by Pete Seeger

Chorus:
One blue sky above us
One ocean lapping all our shore
One earth so green and round
Who could ask for more
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.

1. Some folks want to be like an ostrich,
Bury their heads in the sand.
Some hope that plastic dreams
Can unclench all those greedy hands.
Some hope to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs. They think we need 'em.
Don't you know you can't kill all the unbelievers?
There's no shortcut to freedom.
(Repeat chorus)

2. Go tell, go tell all the little children.
Tell all the mothers and fathers too.
Now's our last chance to learn to share
What's been given to me and you.
(Repeat chorus one and a half times)

Words and Music by Pete Seeger (1967)

47. For the stupidest, most idiotic, geeky reason of all.
Aristus was my 'secret' name.

In a lot of ancient cultures, people had 'secret' names that were bestowed on them by a father, godfather, mentor or tribal chieftain. Once bestowed, it could never be uttered aloud without incurring swift and deadly retribution from the gods.

In my geekiness, I thought it would be cool to have a secret name and chose this one. Yeah, real secret. I told my girlfriend (who is now my wife) within just a few months. "God, you're such a geek!" she said, and then kissed me. Thought it would make a good user name. Found out about a year ago that there was a Catholic saint named Aristus. So it's not original with me, as I had thought.
