I remember my first scholarship audition (bassoon). I got incredibly nervous and honked my way through the Hindemuth sonata. I still got it - but probably because there were so few applicants.

at my last recital...hands didn't match up like normal. I'd never done THAT before. :)

I'm more used to singing in public although I had an outright phobia of doing so at one time. I have enough performances under my belt that it isn't quite so bad. I just tell myself I totally rock and that the audience is lucky I'm there. :) I have to puff up with pride a bit, then come down to earth when it's over.

I'm not sure about piano, though. I picked a very hard piece for me: Bach's "Minuet in G Major (No. 2)." I've only been studying for a semester and a half or so and I'm NOT used to playing for audiences.

The bassoon looks like a terribly difficult instrument. There is a fine oboist / flutist in my voice class. She finds that her oboe training adversely affects her ability to sing properly...interesting. That's one of the reasons I've decided to stay away from wind instruments. I already play a very delicate wind instrument (voice) and I don't want to muck it up. After I've had some decent piano instruction I might try something like guitar. :shrug:

Right now I'm living for music. It's so soothing in these troubled times.

When I've blown auditions / performances in the past, it has been hard, but I tell myself tomorrow is another day and I'll have other opportunities. :) I have done well at times. At other times not so much.

I need to keep my wits during the Bach piece, though. When I played the Mendelssohn piece in public, I made mistakes I'd never made before because I was so nervous. It was like I had forgotten how to play it. Luckily, I was able to bullshit my way through. No one noticed the mistakes because they were mostly rythmic. :) I also hit a D instead of a C, but whatever. :) That Bach piece is busy. I can't afford to wig out like that during performance.

I'll tell myself now: Slow tempo; relax. :) There. That's better. :D

15. Update! I won the largest monetary amount possible: $600. Woohoo!

I sang "Star Vicino," an Italian aria by an unknown composer and played "Minuet in G Major (No.2)" by J.S. Bach on the piano. I did very well (obviously).

16. Call your local musicians union

and ask if they have applications for Music Performance Fund scholarships. Your teacher can probably help you with this.

My local...Washington DC...offers 4 one-time-only scholarships of $500 each year.
