I am curious about this because I go to the right but everyone I know seems to go to the left.

I think I go to the left first. Or maybe I vary it based on what comes before and after. It really has to do with smooth hand movement. And, of course, when I think about it (thanks a lot, Skittles) I don't know which way I do it naturally.
