How to deal with profanity/name-calling in discussions

A bit of enlightenment from the elder DU'ers should help though.... so snap to it!

3. Don't like name-calling but profanity is an effective tool when

used properly and not in excess.

A good curse word with the right timing can often make a point better than hundreds of less vulgar words. The key is to not overuse it. Nothing is more effective that a well timed curse word from someone who rarely uses them.

7. Profanity doesn't bother me, but name-calling/insulting does

Especially the "drive-by" insults. I was in a discussion in GD last week, about tobacco, drugs, alcohol, etc. I worked in chemical dependeny treatment centers for several years, and have formal education in it also. One dude was ranting and raving about "dirty, filty, scum-sucking cigarette smokers", yet thought smoking pot was just fine. Well, I said I didn't not care if someone smoked pot, but I did not want them flying a plane, driving a car, or doing anything else while stoned, any more than I would want someone under the influence of alcohol doing those things. Nor do I want to be around the smell of pot. It nauseates me (and yes, I used to smoke it, years and years ago). Anyway, this guy posts, "You don't know what the hell you're talking about" in response to my posting something about the effects of pot. When I said, yes I did, and posted some more information, all he could do was come back and tell me again I did not know what I was talking about. I asked him why he said that, but he ignored me. I figured he was perhaps a heavy pot smoker trying to justify it. People like that (insulters, not pot-smokers) drive me nuts.

8. I can be guilty of that at times.

But excessive profanity is often a sign of either:
1. the person has internalized the argument, making it personal.
2. the person has a weak argument, and hopes to disarm you by being insulting.

Or maybe they just don't have a stellar vocabulary.

9. I don't care

for profanity, and I abhor the cursing and use of JC and g*d damn, I'm not a religious person but those just really grate on me. Name calling is childish.

oh , I've been told I'm too nice and the word 'prissy' comes at me once in a while.
