Tornadoes Blow

One of the Tornadoes in Springfield Illinois touched down about a half mile from my house. It sounded like it hit next door. Luckily, there was no damage to me, my house, or my family in the area. Yet, I am one of the lucky 2,000 or so in Springfield who still don't have power. I'm at my parents house for the night. Big sections of town are a huge mess. At least my town can get national news for something once in a while.

Have there been a lot of tornado posts that I missed earlier in the day? Anyone else get hit?

Last night was frightening for many people, and there are many more families mourning the loss of their loved ones. Things can be replaced, electricity will return, but people are irreplaceable.

5. They've been visiting down here in Alabama as well.

I grew up in KCMO so I'm beginning to think they're following me.

9. We spent the day in the basement on Sunday.

Just had branches down at my house but did have over 100 tornadoes sighted statewide. We've had a few deaths in adjoining counties and some missing people, extensive farm damage, etc.

This is the start of an interesting season!

11. Lightning storms are worse.

As a native Southerner, I had seen my share of tornadoes, but when I moved to the Midwest to do graduate work, I was rudely awakened by Midwestern lightning storms. A tornado, at least, will go away. Lightning storms can last for hours. They're extremely loud, and they're like Chinese water torture. You never know when the next bolt is going to strike. Half the agony is waiting for it ... like waiting for someone to pop a balloon.

14. Oh man...those rock!

One of the best parts of living in the Midwest...noisy obnoxious thunderstorms! Nothin' like 'em, and I would never want to live in an area that didn't get loud storms. Sure, tornadoes and their associated damage are always a threat, but you take risks anywhere. If I have to take a risk, give me the entertaining one.

I don't think people appreciate just how powerful those twisters are.
