my dog amused me tonight
Whenever I let him outside, he'll always bark when he's ready to come inside.

Tonight, I had the door wide open because it was unusually warm (but not warm enough to fire up the AC).

About twenty minutes after I let him out, I heard him bark outside the door. He wouldn't come inside until I went to the door and said "come on." Probably a common thing, but I thought it was cute somehow.

2. I think they're smarter
than we sometimes give them credit for.

3. You should just tell him that he can come in if the door is open....
I talk to my dogs all the time, and they understand perfectly well.

It kinda freaks me out.

4. Canines can learn hundreds of words
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,3604,1236272,00.html

They just aren't very good at speaking them. I once had a lab-dane mix that would try to talk. It was pretty funny and it seemed pretty frustrating for her.

Most dog owners soon learn to spell B-A-T-H and V-E-T around their pets; they understand far more than we give them credit for. Plus they are very good at picking up on non-verbal communication.

6. Yes, I absolutely believe they understand most of what we say....
I see evidence of it daily.

My Lola usually only talks when she's really excited... but she understands common conversational language.. it's really freaky, but a great party trick!

7. We have to spell R-I-D-E in front of our dachshund
If we say the word ride, he makes a beeline for the garage door and dances around to get in the car. His name is Rusty, but I want to rename him Gump ("GUMP!! You're a goddamned genius!!).

8. Reminds me of an old Dave Barry column -->
His screened-in front porch was nearly destroyed by a storm. All that was left was the floor and screen door and the frame the door was hung on. No walls. Still his two dogs would stop at the screen door and wait for someone to let them 'out.'
