question about collection/telemarketer calls
Does anyone know who you contact when you are hounded by collection agencies for the person who had your last home telephone #? This has been going on since I moved into my last house 4 years ago (moved from there & canceled that phone # 1 year ago).

They are now calling my cell phone (even though the guy they're looking for had my home #, so obviously they traced my home # to this cell phone now), costing me minutes, and the last woman was really nasty to me on the phone. No idea if she is calling for a company that I've already told (re: my home phone) that they have the wrong #, but she has called my cell 3 times looking for this guy.

She calls today, asks for the guy by name, I say this is not his phone # and she just hangs up before I can say anything else.

I then called back, ask did you just call this # (she says she doesn't know, even though it happened 2 minutes earlier), and ask her to tell me where she got the # from so I could correct it and she screamed (no exaggeration) at me "It was a wrong number! Don't call back!" and then hung up on me again!

Any ideas?

1. I had that happen to me.
I called the company, got the supervisor and threatened legal action if they ever called me again. I then faxed him a letter stating the same.

Never heard from them again.

3. that's what I intended, but all I have is her phone #,
she won't say who she works for, and reverse # lookup didn't work. Did you run into that?

4. No. Did she tell you who the debt was to?
You might be able to find out which collection company they submitted it to.

5. No. I just have the phone #. They won't tell me what agency they're with,
tried looking it up online but no info, and they hung up twice when I tried to ask them...

My real question is, is this somrthing to call the police about? State AG's office?

2. Collections callers use autodialers
and often do not know who they are calling until the info flashes up on screen for them, so they may not know if they called you two minutes ago.

7. Call after shift change.
Lots of those places work 16 hours a day, so call this evening. Try to get someone else. Otherwise, just keep calling her until she gives you the company name. Don't get mad, just be persistent.
