Supposed to be going to bed but LAUGHING at Mrs. V. and Paula Deen:
Was watching just a moment of Paula Deen in a live cooking show, just before turning off the TV. Someone in the audience asked Paula what she considered to be the best thing to use for flavor or seasoning. Paula thought for just a second, then replied "butter."

While I was cracking up, Mrs. V. said, "being a Southerner, I'm surprised she didn't say 'bacon grease.'" Just a beat later Paula said, "or bacon grease."

2. That was really funny! I liked the bit about "Are you pregnant yet?"
It was a dreadfully disappointing show, though. I thought it was supposed to be about her - you know, a biography, like the one they did for Emeril, like they advertised it.

And all it was was a fricking cooking show in a fancy hotel that didn't tell me anything about who she is, where she started, and yada yada yada.

3. Unfortunately I didn't even know it was on until that moment when I
turned off the movie I was watching on Tivo.

Of course, I Tivo'd Paula. Even though you say it wasn't very good, I'll watch it anyway. Never know what creative new ways I'll find to clog my arteries.

5. I caught it later, and saw the beginning, and it WAS good!
I came into it about 20 minutes late, and had missed all the actual biography part of it.

Interesting life she had. Wow!

6. Scrambled eggs are best when cooked in bacon grease.
My Southern mom always makes them this way. First you cook the bacon then you use the same pan for the eggs. My Nana cooked scrambled eggs this way too as did my Mamaw (my great grandmother). Any good Southern cook always saves bacon grease in a glass jar, usually a Dukes Mayo jar!

I love Paula Deen. :)

8. Spicy sausage grease works well, too.
Gosh, I haven't eaten like that in a loooooooong time, but when I did, it was _good_. Gimme biscuits and sausage gravy for any meal, and I'll be a happy woman (until the ingredients show up on my butt.)

9. Mmm! Sawmill gravy and red eye gravy and homemade biscuits!
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 01:06 PM by CottonBear
My mom can make all of those. So good! You're right: sausage grease is almost as good as bacon grease! However, the fat goes straight to my butt (and hips and thighs...) Have you ever had maple sugar cured country bacon (the big thick slabs of bacon)? OMG! I had some a while back and it was THE BEST BACON I'VE EVER HAD. :)

11. I'm not familiar with that term. We know it as country bacon here in GA.
It's similar to country cured ham. Yum! :) I can feel my ateries clogging jsut thinking about eating some!

7. But, but, but . . . it's _true_!
One of the best spinach salads I ever had was _drenched_ in bacon grease. Gawwwwwwwwww, I'm hungry. (It's CMW's might to cook, so, for lack of a better descriptor, I'll just say, "It's 6:58 p.m., and we're running a little behind schedule." *Famished.* Gimme bacon grease.)
