What happens when you die?
I'm an atheist. I don't believe in heaven or hell. I also don't believe in supreme beings of any kind (Diana Ross notwithstanding), but I do believe that we're all somehow connected and that when we die our energy continues to live on somehow. Evolved? Not sure. Reincarnated? Also not sure.

I think spirits and ghosts are the energy of people who can't accept their death. I think that those who accept they've died become one with the universe or perhaps just meld with other consciousnesses of others who have died and spend their existence roaming and searching for greater mysteries.

1. I hope to see my loved ones again
but I don't really believe that there is something when we die. I guess we'll find out the moment we die.

3. My Mom asked me this right before she passed. We're both atheists.
I told her my best answer: We go wherever we were before we were born. We've always existed one way or the other, but not necessarily in recognizable forms or beings. She liked that. That belief has me not as afraid of death as I used to be.

5. The simple answer is that we don't know - and can only speculate.
I personally believe in a pretty traditional Catholic view.

Our bodies lie in the dust, and our souls rest in purgatory. At the end of time, our bodies are raised, made incorruptible and reunited with our souls - at which point we enter eternity.

8. we break on through to the other side
You know the day destroys the night
Night divides the day
Tried to run
Tried to hide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side, yeah

We chased our pleasures here
Dug our treasures there
But can you still recall
The time we cried
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side

Yeah!
C’mon, yeah

Everybody loves my baby
Everybody loves my baby
She get
She get
She get
She get high

I found an island in your arms
Country in your eyes
Arms that chain us
Eyes that lie
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through, oww!
Oh, yeah!

Made the scene
Week to week
Day to day
Hour to hour
The gate is straight
Deep and wide
Break on through to the other side
Break on through to the other side
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Break on through
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

10. We don't die
I believe our bodies die, but they just go to that decomposition junkyard. Our energy, conscious and sub-conscious stays intact in some form or another. I believe in reincarnation too. This piddly 85 or so years per life isn't time to get anything really accomplished.

We are made of star dust we will return to star dust for further constructions.

Every thing that ever was will be again and again until the stars go out.

Fear not.

perhaps we even realize that "death" is the greatest illusion of all....we're simply changing form.

13. My brother is an athiest.
We've talked about life after death. His belief is that we become part of an energy field while I hold the more traditional Heaven aspect. (I have a hard time w/ hell-I suspect that for some, this life is their hell).

I guess we won't truly know until we die.

15. I'm with johnnie and 180 on this one......
I strongly feel that our souls go on.......

And perhaps we do get another chance at making things right here......

I know some people here that I'm convinced I've known before.....

Our souls connect so profoundly...so completely......

But, I'm still afraid to die.......I have so much I still want to accomplish in this life.....

Great thread! Thanks for posting it......

20. When we die, we stay dead until Judgment Day...
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 11:44 AM by Heaven and Earth
when Arnold Schwarzeneggar shows up to save us from the T-1000.

Seriously, though, we get resurrected on Judgment Day. After that, I can't begin to hazard a guess.

27. when you die you reach ground luminosity
and you have a choice of accepting it and achieving heaven (nirvana, a better rebirth, nice things). Most of us will be so effected by attachment and desire (at ground luminosity you know all - would you want to go to heaven knowing the cia killed jfk or w. mihop? my karma would require me to return to earth to fight the BFEE!) that we skip right over the ground luminosity and are essentially reborn.

28. I really have no idea
but I think something survives. I don't know what or how. I like your theory, though.

I know that I lost both my parents recently and I don't feel their presence at all. They aren't "with me." They have moved on somewhere else.

31. Regarding energy...
I agree with your idea--that we all have certain amounts of energy within us, and I think that when we die, that energy is absorbed back into the universe. It's the only thing that makes any sense to me when it comes to "life after death" issues...

32. We each become one with the cosmic light until reincarnation
Or we all go to hell.

Seriously, I am a liberal christian who doesn't believe in hell. I do think that there is a heaven, but that it is not necessarily what people think it is. We won't know for sure until we die, and I'm not going to worry about it too much because there is so much to do while I'm still alive.
