The question is whether the pennies are pre-1982 pennies or post-1982 pennies, because they have different masses, and older pennies weigh less than new ones and are thinner than new ones through wear.

An average penny takes up .360 cubic centimeters and the average quart is 57.75 cubic inches, or 946.352 cubic centimeters, so the approximate figure is 2628.7555 repeating pennies, or to round, 2629 pennies.

So... about 26 bucks.

(And no, I can't remember why I know that a penny has a volume of .36 cubic centimeters. I think from physics class yea these many years ago?)

So taking politicat's figure of 2629 and multiplying by 0.6 gives us 1577, which is reasonably close to HypnoToad's answer of 1421.

When I counted a half-cup of pennies, I got different answers every time, varying from 150 to 190 pennies per half-cup. If a half-cup holds 170 +/- 20 pennies, then 55 gallons holds 299,200 +/- 18,000 pennies. Even two significant digits is pushing it. I also figured the volume of a penny as:

Volume = 1/4 pi d^2 h = 1/4 pi (3/4) (3/4) (.061) = .027 in^3.

55 gallons is 12,705 in^3, and dividing gives 470,000 pennies total. That's assuming 100% filling, like melting the pennies and pouring them into the drum. Then I took 100 ml of pennies and found that it took about 40 ml of water to cover them, for a packing density of about 60%. This gives a final estimate of 282,000 pennies, in the same neighborhood at least.

Perhaps HypnoToad only packed the pennies to a density of .54%?

FYI: 1421 pennies multiplied by 2.65g per penny results in 3766g, almost exactly what a gallon of water would weigh.

Numbers do that to me. If I get an equation in my head and I can't solve a math problem, I lose sleep over it and obsess with it until eventually a loud popping sound comes from inside my head. I then wander around in a daze for about a week and can't seem to form a complete thought. It's weird.
