I'm gonna make Dad sit down and watch them with me... at least the first two episodes. (Believe me, I won't have to twist his arm!)

Sorry I'm late in responding, but we spent all night writing out thank you cards for memorial gifts. Geez, my mom had a lot of friends! And that, all by itself, makes me smile. :)

2. I gotta tell this story now

A few days after Bob Crane was found dead in a motel room under curious circumstances way back when, the "Peanuts" strip for the day featured Charlie Brown telling Linus how Spike, Snoopy's visiting cousin, kept himself entertained.

The last panel had Spike watching teevee and the voice from the teevee saying, "Ah, Mr. Spock" — except in the San Francisco Chronicle, where it said, "Ah, Colonel Hogan," with a different style of lettering in the balloon than Charles Schulz's.

I cut out both strips. Somewhere, I still have them.

I didn't think about it at the time because I was just a punk sportswriter, but there's probably a story in it. Still, even.

"Hogan" has been a family favorite, ever since I was a wee one. It's one of the few shows that makes Dad (and me) laugh out loud. :)
