...but I know that there is one in Japanese.
A specific name for that TYPE of advertising.
It is a minor genré in Japanese PopCulture.(They have many.)

This particular one is characterized by very
'over-the-top' stylized homoeroticism.

As I said, that has a GREAT "WTF???" factor, doesn't it?
Too bad Kikkoman still sucks- I use nothing
but 'Pearl River Bridge' soy sauces these days.

Listen to my story:

The other month, I paid $28 at a local 4-star eatery
for about 5 ounces of 'Steak TarTar'...
And it was AWESOME!

I spent a WEEK ranting to everyone I knew
about how GREAT it was,
and I was really at a loss for words
to describe the subtle-yet-tangy
vinegar-based marinade that the chef had used.

And then it finally hit me like a ton of tomatos:
It was a frickin' KETCHUP recipe!!!

Instead of mixing the vinegar and spices into tomato paste,
the Chef had just applied them directly to the raw meat.

As far as I'm concerned, BRILLIANCE like that is worth $2.25 an ounce!

the word comes from Indonesia, where in their language it's the generic term for any kind of sauce.

They spell it KECAP, but in their orthography the C is pronounced as a CH. So "Ketchup" is closer to correct.

I was told that "Catsup" came about because somebody (Heinz?) succeeded in nailing down a trademark for the word "Ketchup" (which wasn't actually legal, but Ambrose Bierce once defined "lawyer" as "one who is skilled at circumventing the law") so other vendors had to change the name of their product...

The interesting question is why we had to go to Indonesia to formulate a tomato sauce that would justify a fast-food hamburger.
