It's 3 o'clock, i'm snowed in, should I start drinking Martinis now,
or get some work done first and then go to the bar and start drinking Martinis while reading Kurlansky's book on Salt and/or one of my science and theology journals and/or read some more in my new "how to play chess" book and practice a bit?

I do have some work that I could do, that would make tomorrow a little easier, but, on the other hand, it doesn't necessarily need to be done today...

9. You're snowed in?
I'll trade you the snow in exchange for Sunday's tornadoes. A friend had her house leveled from that shit.

14. Nah, I've done my time in Tornado-land
Not going back into that cleanup bullshit mess.

Sorry to hear about your friend - tornadoes have to the worst, because they come, really, with no warning. Oh, sure, they can sort of predict that conditions are right for a tornado and that one *might* form, but really, there's no warning to 'em - they just show up and five minutes later a few square miles have been completely destroyed. Earthquakes are nasty the same way.

Hurricanes and typhoons, at least, give a few days' warning.

16. She's just happy that they were at
her MIL's house when it hit. She's glad that she wasn't stuck there w/ her children when it all went down.

And tornadoes are the worst. There is no real prediction-just a maybe. My brother, his wife and his stepchildren all live in a trailer park until she finishes her degree next May. They usually drive to my house when the sirens sound. The seventh siren sounded (yep, nine warnings that night), they gathered the kids and started grabbing shoes. Then they heard on the news that it was less than an quarter of a mile from them. They had 30 seconds warning-no more. They took cover in a large ditch nearby, knowing that they could not make the five miles to my house. At the last minute the damn thing moved out of their path and further north. Lots of wind damage but they are able to stay there, at least.

I hate fucking tornadoes and they are predicting a hell of a season this year.

Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 04:28 PM by underpants
Is it any good? Is it about how salt changed civilization?

15. It's great - his book on cod was also fantastic.
I'm big on the history of food, and especially books that get into the politics of it all. Nathaniel's Nutmeg is another great one.

I've been reading Salt for a while - it's a thick one, but also my reading time has been so small...
