I'm not going to the funeral home tonight.
It's just too much. In the last few weeks I have lost three friends. The first was from a heroin overdose. The next was a heart attack during detox. This last one was suicide. My friends lived fast, much faster than me.

I know it is getting near the time when I see friends fall by the wayside, but all three were avoidable, unnecessary, and tragic beyond words. They were all too young to die.

I know I should go an pay my respects, but I'm too raw, too sad to make that hour long drive to the funeral home. I miss them all and love them more than anything.

I've lost five friends in the past year. I'm tired of putting on my suit. I'm tired of being strong for the families sake. I'm going to a restaurant and fill up on some good comfort food, come home, have a glass of wine then hit the sack and maybe I can sleep off the blues.

1. I'm so sorry for your loss, alfredo...
to lose so many of your friends to such tragic circumstances is so sad. Please take care of yourself, and be kind to you. Having a nice dinner, a glass of wine, and getting some sleep would probably do you good.

They know how much you cared about them, and you can tell them goodbye in your own way...

6. Thanks. I had to get out of the house, ate some Jambalya
and met with friends. I feel better.

11. I'm so glad to hear that you did something to comfort YOU tonight.
You really needed it. Jambalaya is a true comfort food! Having friends to surround you and support you right now, is so important. Good for you for choosing to meet with friends. You must know that we DUers will always be here for you...

You will continue to be in my prayers...

15. Well, I'm 61, I should be getting used to seeing
friends fall by the wayside. Maybe their death puts me in touch with my mortality. I know some day a friend will see my name in the obits. I'm hoping they will be really really old.

4. take care of yourself. At this point, that is the best you can do
for your lost friends. Be as least as good to yourself as to your friends at times like this.

Sorry to hear of your losses. Do rest and be gentle with yourself.

9. The others I knew they would not live a long life, but this last
one came out of the blue. There were no signs that there were problems out of the usual pissing and moaning.

Suicide is a horrible thing on so many levels.

7. You can always express condolences later on.
During this time, the family is in shock, and probably won't remember much about who was/wasn't there. It will be just as meaningful to them if you contact them later. Trust me on this - we just went through this with my Mom's funeral last week.

I'm sorry for all your losses. Take care of yourself, and be good to YOU.

I hope you've gotten a chance to eat some comfort food and have a glass of wine. Please feel ok about not going to the funeral...I'm sure your friend understands.

12. So much loss, alfredo
I'm sorry to hear that. I cannot imagine how overwhelmed you must be, losing three friends so close together. I don't blame you for not wanting to go to the funeral home. My condolences to you.
