Ask me anything or maybe just give me some advise on what to do with 400 old Vinyl Records so they don't deteriorate anymore

1. Lynne, I know there are companies that will transfer your old vinyl
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 11:43 PM by Radio_Lady
to digital storage. I just don't know where those companies are -- or where YOU are!

Let's try some research ---

6. So, you have a regular phonograph to play them on?
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 11:50 PM by Radio_Lady
Just the way they are? With the hissing and clicking? I understand now. No problem.

You probably need something climate controlled. Where are you storing them?
Eventually, they will be ruined by usage and climate, I guess. Heat is a DEFINITE no-no. Extreme cold is also a problem.

Hello to Wilmington, DE -- never been there!

In peace,

9. For What It's Worth preceded the Anti-War movement
It was inspired by the "Sunset Strip Riots" of 1965, so says Jim Messina.

13. Ok, I'll give it what I got
The least expensive way to go is with a manual record cleaning machine. Nitty Gritty makes one (Model 1.0) for $335 list price. I think a company called Record Doctor makes a cheaper one, but I'm not sure.

Next up are the motor driven machines that turn the LP for you. Again, Nitty Gritty makes three models, and I've heard good reviews about two of them. The Model 1.5 lists for $649, the Model 2.5 for $719.

Finally, there is a company called VPI. They make the Model HW 16.5, which lists for $525. Tis is the one I have, and I really like it. Had I still had my LP collection from a while back (which numbered over 7000 LP's, I think) I would have bought the HW-17, which has a fan in it and is the one to get if you really want state of the art cleaning. It also costs $1200. :(

As for cleaning fluid, I know that the VPI comes with a bottle of it, and (amazingly enough) they even tell you how to "cut" it so it lasts longer! Nice touch. Otherwise, there are all kinds of places to get fluid that you either use by itself or in conjunction with whatever machine you have.

If you want any more info, just ask!

12. Actually
LP storage shouldn't be that much of a problem. They should stand upright in some sort of shelf unit with firm sides, and the mutual pressure keeps them from warping (provided the temperature never gets too extreme). Even today, stores that specialize in furniture for college students (of whom there are boatloads here in Boston) sell shelving optimized for LPs, based on cubes 13" square. The largest are single units internally divided into six such cubes, which will hold (per my previous post on the subject) about 450-500 LPs.

Come on up to Boston and we'll go shopping. I'll also take you to visit Boston's interesting variety of used record stores-- not as thrifty as the 50 cent bins, but you can reliably get better stuff.

14. Vinyl Record Lovers of the World -- UNITE!
Now I wish I hadn't donated about 1000 vinyl records to some little charity in Natick, Massachusetts for a couple of donation slips. That was about three weeks before we took a truckload of other stuff to Portland, Oregon. I miss my records, too.

But who knew? Our huge Sylvania record player hadn't worked in years -- didn't even know where to get replacement needles. I remember donating a small phonograph record player to a neighbor who was incapacitated -- basically housebound, and he was glad to have it. Eight-track recordings were never an option to us, and our cars had cassette players and they seemed good enough. I didn't have any CDs at all when we completed the move (maybe a demo one) that is if I remember correctly. I kept driving an older 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse with a cassette player and have more than 500 of those still in my possession. My husband bought a new car in 1997, with a six-CD player located in the trunk (very inconvenient and still is).

A few years later, phonographs reappeared in a triumvirate with RADIO and CASSETTE! Boy, that was a surprise!

So, maybe I'll keep my cassettes and CDs -- Who said, "The more things change, the more they remain the same"??
