Sit.
Drink way-overpriced alcohol (not in my case).
Inhale the death stench of secondhand smoke.
Mill past tons of Jersey-mook-looking beer guts with cheap cologne to take a piss.
Listen to really bad modern rap, really bad modern country, John Mellen CougarCamp, AC/DC or post Smell the Glove-Metallica.
All of your conversations border on yelling, if you have one at all, because music listed above is blaring to the point of agony.
Drink more way-overpriced alcohol (again, not in my case).
Inhale even more secondhand smoke.
Pop two to six Advil because secondhand smoke is giving you a headache.
Watch people on TV you can't hear (or even read, because they don't even bother to put the CC on), music videos you can't hear or sports you don't like.
Repeat for four to six HOURS.

I don't know, where's the fun in this is all I'M asking? I don't get how people can do this every fucking weekend, and sometimes even more than that. I hated going to these places when I DID drink, and just avoid them completely since I stopped in 1989. At least with concerts (which are often held in places like I just described), there's a band so if anything you have a REASON to be there. What's the reason with just a plain BAR?

The wife's on my case because she wants to go out tonight with friends and is pissed because I won't go. I'm not getting why I have to be there for her to have a good time? If anything, I would think I'd louse things up because all I'll do is bitch because I'm bored. Seriously, if you aren't drinking, you aren't really doing much else.

1. No smoke in Vancouver bars
I don't frequent the places, but there are a few lounges I like. They're quieter.

8. Got no such luxury in Clevo.
EVERY bar/club/whatever is smoking. Dave and Busters - smoking. Outback Steakhouse - smoking. Dennys - smoking. IHOP - smoking. The bar she wants to go to tonight - smoking smoking SMOKING.

I'll just say no to the jock-cigarette sauna, thank you.

3. Me...for some of the same reasons...
I don't drink (because I can't)...the music is usually not very good...you really can't talk, and the T.V. thing. I know A lot of people go to dance, but I'm not much into that. I can't comment on the second hand smoke there because I drive a car which emits the same type of noxious fumes into the air. :hi:

4. I appreciate bars on occasion
but it's not my regular habit, for all the reasons you named. Except for me, trade the Jersey mooks for college frat boys. But it essentially the same experience.

I sometimes like to go out and sit with my friends and just talk and have a drink or two. But I don't require someone to go with me. If I were her, I would have no compunction about leaving you to your devices for an evening, if I wanted. And the same would apply to you for me.

You might want to ask her if she partly feels uncomfortable when she isn't around you.

7. She's usually with her sister or brother
So in that case she's probably better off with people at least on the same wavelength.

5. I guess they're fun once every few years...
...but it all depends upon the company. If my friends hung out there, I might, too.

6. Woah...when the hell did I register "HughBeaumont" as a sockpuppet?
That's basically my exact sentiment towards bars. I only go if a band I like is playing. Otherwise, fuck that shit.

10. I've NEVER been a bar fan and never will be.
I know of nothing more boring than sitting around in a thick cloud of secondhand smoke, drinking and watching others drink. I have better things to do with my time than to waste it like that. I'm not a big drinker (one glass of wine MAYBE every four to six months). I'm a nonsmoker and get sick from breathing secondhand smoke.

I'm with you, Hugh! :)

11. I thought bars were fun in the late 60's and early 70's.
I don't go to bars at all now unless it's for a DU meet-up.
