Anyone else cooking corn beef today?
I put one in the crock pot this morning. I'll probably think about it all day...

When I get home, first I'll have some yummy corn beef, and then it's out to the Irish bar!

I love St. Pat's Day. :)

12. That I am.
I can barely stand to be at work today. I've had St. Pat's off for over ten years. Not today, though.

6. I heard Catholics were given a special dispensation today so...
they can eat corned beef.

I'm not Catholic or Irish either. :hi: But I do like corned beef, but not the cabbage. :yuck:

3. Nope, but our friend is!
The St. Paddy's party at his place has become a tradition for us,
so that's where I'll be gettin' my CB&C on!

He also makes his own beer, which is pretty darn good.

8. I am - but I have a question
I was wondering just how IRISH a meal of corned beef, cabbage, and boiled potatoes actually is.

If I were in Ireland today, how hard would it be to find such a meal???

10. It's not Irish
Beef was rare in Ireland -- pork was the thing used most often for festive meals (and the festivity at this time of year was Easter Sunday, not St Patrick's Day). You can get corned beef and cabbage in Ireland, but it's probably downed more by tourists there than by anyone else and, besides, you can also get corned beef and cabbage in a ton of other countries around the globe.

It's more common in the US than Ireland...it's almost as Irish as egg foo yung is Chinese.

19. Cabbage and potatoes with bacon would be typical
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 11:59 AM by Gormy Cuss
It morphed to corned beef here because it was the cheap meat available in the states. Corned beef did exist in Ireland but it was rare because having beef for the average peasant meant his dairy cow had to die.

9. Yes, I put one in the crockpot too.
The Bishop said it was okay.

I like to use the crockpot because it makes the house smell good all day.
