PC question. How do you clear URL from Navigational bar menu?
With Windows XP?
My kid went to sites that I dont want displayed on the drop-down navigational bar menu. I cant find the option to delete URL's from the drop-down.
I'm Tech-Dumb, so if anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it.

1. Right-click...
...on a "blank" spot on the bar, then uncheck "Address Bar."

2. Not sure
But I think you can go to "tools", "options" and "privacy" tab and choose "clear browsing history". I think that's how it's done.

6. I take that back.
If, in IE, you've already "Clear(ed) History," and it's still there, you might have to get rid of cookies, too. IE...Tools...Options...Security...

12. I have an odd situation. I clear history, files and cookies...
on Internet Explorer at the end of every day. (I'm sometimes a bit obsessive/compulsive). For some time, however, several random DU threads have still not disappeared from my history. Any thoughts or ideas?

14. Get a program called Window Washer
You can get it packaged with Spysweeper, since they're both produced by Webroot. There are some freeware programs that do similar things, but Window Washer is pretty nice.

28. Here's a list of such programs
http://www.passtheshareware.com/c-cookies.htm

I can't vouch for the quality of any of them but the commercial version of Window Washer, though.

16. The cookies and history should not prevent you from getting a connection
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 02:53 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Your browser settings are not related to your internet connection.

What kind of connection do you have on the desktop?

15. What, exactly, did you do
What steps did you take? There are several pieces of advice on this thread. Before anyone can troubleshoot, you have to explain what you actually did.

If you cleared the cookies, then you also cleared the cookie that recognizes your computer for DU. If you simply cleared the history, then this shouldn't have happened.

19. Well, the first thing I did was clear cookies, as instructed.
Then another DUer suggested the Clear History, which I did. So then I noticecd thsat I had no DU history/password/user id...So I then decided to do a system restore to two days ago, when all was well. After the restore, no connection. Now the Network Connection window shows that I am connected. I just cany access Firefox or IE.

20. You did a system restore????
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 03:08 PM by alcibiades_mystery
Why, in God's name???

Before you do anything else. CALM DOWN!!!!! The system restore was a silly, panicked reaction, the number one reason for computer problems. It was unnecessary, and probably screwed something up that was otherwise OK. You cleared the cookie that remembered your user id and password. Two solutions: 1) Reenter them (log in again), 2) Have DU email you for the password if you forgot it. But a system restore? Oy. (In fact, you didn't have to clear cookies at all to solve your original problem; that was bad advice).

You'll probably have to reinstall Firefox. There's no reason IE shouldn't work. Without any working browser, it will be difficult to reinstall Firefox. Both should actually be working, but system restores are notorious for screwing up programs. Try shutting down, starting up again, and trying to run IE.

All my DU info is gone. Avatars, siglines, everything. But only on my Desktop. My laptop still has those things.

22. No way
That simply doesn't make any sense. There's nothing you could have done that would have erased your information from DU's databases. Email Skinner, ask him to send you your password for the former user name, and sign in again using that. You can't erase this stuff from DU by anything you do on your computer at home. It is simply impossible.

24. Again, impossible
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 03:28 PM by alcibiades_mystery
If you sign in to DU on your desktop using your old user ID and password, all your information should be there. They probably emailed you a new user id and password because you asked for a "new" user id and password. Just sign in using your old user id (maveric, without the 56) and your old password. You are misunderstanding where this information is kept. It is kept on computers owned by DU, and you have absolutely no way to change those, whatever you do to your browser settings or system at home. Your system at home has absolutely nothing to do with it at all. Zero, nothing, nada.

The fact that all your information still appears on your laptop should be all the evidence you need. Just go ahead and sign into DU using your old user id and password, and all your old information will be there, I assure you. Sign off as maveric56 first.

26. Did that. Now I must enter username and password in login window.
I enetr "maveric" but I cant remember the password. I got it in Jan. 2002 and didnt write it down anywhere. So I asked for a new pasword, entered "maveric" and my e-mail address. The problem here is that when I first registered on DU I had another e-mal address/carrier, that I cant remember. So it not recognizing me on DU. This happened some time ago and the Admins gave me the new info, which is what I DONT want. They got me back in but the password they gave me wont work anymore. So...What I need is a new or my old, password with my same username.

27. Yeah, that's a problem
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 03:45 PM by alcibiades_mystery
I can see this happening if you signed in originally with a hotmail account or something, and you simply don't use that anymore, have no access to it, etc.

I would go back to the admins. It will be a massive pain in the ass for them, but I'm sure they can track down your old password and send it to your new email. Beg, plead, promise donations and favors. The point is that you don't want the new user id, you want the old one, and to get the old one, you need the old password sent to a new email. I'm not positive they can track down this info (it may all be automated), but I'm guessing something like a super user access to their servers would allow them to track it down. Email them this thread so that they have a clearer idea of the problem and the solution. Obviously, there are also security issues involved. the reason why the password is only sent to the old email is because if not, anyone could pretend to be you and have your account info sent to them. In order to avoid this impression, you may want to PM Skinner from your logged in laptop; that way, your identity as maveric (without the 56) is certain.

Best bet for the future would be to save the password for DU somewhere safe.
