Lake Superior - Dialup Warning
My husband and I went up to Hinckley and the north shore of Lake Superior for a mid-week getaway. Here are some pictures I took. I was very surprised to see the lake open (usually this time of year, the Coast Guard has to send the cutter boats through to open the shipping lanes.)

The lighthouse in the pictures is the Split Rock Lighthouse (my all time favorite lighthouse)

19. Well if you take Interstate 35 until it ends
you will end up in Duluth MN. At the end of I-35 is MN state hwy 61 which runs up the north shore.

We are pretty far north though!

10. Oh, yeah.
The wind coming off the lake was brisk, to say the least. But the water was so blue, and the pictures truly did not do the area justice.

Or maybe not. Share that beauty!

I love that lake. I think I'm gonna sea kayak (for a change of pace from the whitewater) a bit around Isle Royale at the end of May. That should be a very fun time!

40. I have never actually seen one "live"
just photos, in movies, etc.

Don't know why - you'd think as much as I've gotten around, I'd visit at least 1!!

One of my very best friends is from your area; was actually a "pilot" on one of the bigger boats. Crap, now I'm sad - I haven't seen him in months!! When he's around, I'm not, and etc. Last I heard, he was on a dogsled headed for Nome!

41. The lighthouse in the photo is now a "state park"
I believe it is no longer in use, other than for exhibition purposes.

I sure hope you find your friend and that his dogsled trip is safe.

42. Thanks, KitchenWitch -
He's fine, he just likes to "go to nowhere" - this wasn't an Iditarod run for him, just for fun. Some of my friends are rather odd!

So many lighthouses need to be on a protected list! My sister-in-law is CG auxiliary, and is a lighthouse fanatic - she must have replicas of 200 or so in her house, everything from little ceramic models to 3-D puzzles she's built. They are fascinating.

Plus, the blue in your lake is awesome!

48. I heard they sent the cutter through to Duluth this past week
It's strange there's no ice close to shore, though. Usually it kind of piles up by the twin ports in the spring-- or so I remember.

Very cool pics! The lake is very impressive in winter.
