PETA meets Formula One (WARNING: EXTREME WTF-NESS INSIDE)
This was posted on a F1 forum I frequent with no link -- I'll post one when I find out where it's from. Maybe it's a paid site, since I couldn't find it in Google.

These people ARE wound up a bit too tightly, ain't they?

Alonso's posturing upsets PETA
Friday, March 17th 2006, 15:00 GMT

(...)Indian MP Maneka Gandhi, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has interpreted Fernando Alonso's posturing during the Bahrain Grand Prix as a mimicking of the motions of a bullfighter. Gandhi has therefore written a letter criticising Formula One's world champion.

The Renault driver was seen posturing on top of his car and on the podium after finishing the Sakhir event, and, after the Spaniard refused to explain the move, speculation has been rife about the possible explanation. The posturing, however, is believed to have nothing to do with bullfighting, and Spanish media claim Alonso's move was an imitation of actor Jim Carrey in the movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Gandhi said attempting to glorify bullifight offends millions of opponents of animal abuse. "The torment of a living being and his subsequent repeated stabbing and often slow death, as well as the removal of his ears, is barbaric and no longer acceptable by any humane standards", wrote Gandhi.

(...)In the past, PETA had called to ban the habit of drinking milk at the Indianapolis 500 podium because it was a "beverage born out of cruelty to baby calves" and a "racist drink."

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

On a saner note, they have previously been trying to enlist Alonso's endorsement for an ad campaign entitled "Race cars, not bulls." Link in Spanish: http://www.petaenespanol.com/celeb/falonso.html

That I'd certainly like to see. Bullfighting IS barbaric. Ditto for those events where people run with bulls on the street. (which is the event mentioned in the Spanish link above)

I wonder, if a less extreme animal rights org had extended the same invitation, would Alonso have accepted?

1. Racist drink? Oh, I'll keep that in mind...
I know the human race drinks it.

So those of Asian and African descent aren't human, is that what PeeETA are saying?! They are nuts. Nuttier than a health food store.

4. Interpreting body language? Extreme WTFness indeed.
I'm absolutely with you on the bullfighting issue, same for bull riding (if people knew what they do to stir up those animals--well, let's just say it could lead to the reader's constipation).

Once you have that chocolatey goodness, you'll never miss the whiteness-or something like that.

I am an equal opportunity milk drinker actually. I'm looking at you Mrs. Soy and you Mr. Almond.

Niiiiiiiiice. Now we have unsubstantiated PETA-bashing from a FORMULA ONE website. Excellent flamebait!

Why don't you just make it up next time? I'm sure it'll work equally well.

7. There is just something about PETA...makes me smile...
When I hear these stories. I know they are outrageous in some of their tactics, but there is something inside me that admires them. I guess its the theory that no publicity is bad publicity for the animal rights cause. And whenever they do one of these stunts there is the expected "look what the hell they are doing now" comment from the media. But buried in every story is the explanantion for why they are doing it.

16. Damn Right
Their are far more mainstream organizations with more members and more money that aren't half as well known as PETA, because PETA uses these tactics that everyone clucks at.

19. I think all are needed...
These issues are multifaceted, and need groups that are good at different things. I appreciate there are groups like PETA, Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd doing what they do...brings publicity. But I also appreciate groups like the NRDC, Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy. Some groups have to work within the system as well...and these groups are good at that....a multi pronged approach, particularly when it comes to the environment!

Don't get me wrong, I do admire in principle what they say, to a degree....but interpreting body language?

11. Here's the "racist drink" info
I honestly don't care for the terminology here, but for clarity's sake, the reason that PETA has stated milk is a "racist drink" (from what I understand) is because it's unhealthy, and a large proportion of minorities (especially African Americans) are lactose intolerant. Feeding cow's milk to children, as most parents are taught to believe is proper, is not in the child's best interest, when he or she is lactose intolerant.

I do agree, however, that milk is a beverage born of cruelty, both to mother cow and baby calf. Considering that there would be no such thing as a veal crate if not for the milk industry simply escalates that.

22. interesting, but still stupid (re: racist)--
but I am on board with the rest--why the hell do we feel entitled to torture animals for our own unnatural desires? You can't kill and eat a human being just cause you want to... mmm, cannibalism... ew.

are also lactose intolerant.

On edit: Oops, forgot to add than many Asian cultures do not indulge in milk and milk products as we do.

15. I'd think that PETA people would also abhor Formula One
and not say "Race cars, not bulls". Race cars pollute with both oil industry accidents and environmental degradation, destroying shitloads of wildlife and natural lands; plus the goddamn things are so loud, they emit hellacious noise pollution, further affecting wildlife. And human life.

If I were a PETA person, I'd rather allow for the occasional bullfight than support car racing.

21. that IS nutty--although the part about milk is somewhat on target--
while I have absolutely no idea why they would call it racist (that is beyond me...), it is both borne out of animal cruelty and plain old unnatural.

No other animal on earth drinks the breast milk of another animal. No other animal on earth drinks milk past childhood.

It's completely unnecessary and rather disgusting. Mmm, bovine lactose... ew.
