Ironically, all those "cool" jobs went to the popular, Jock/Cheerleader Baptist kids. Not a Methodist in the bunch...bastards :grr:

That's Buttercup Park where I played as a child. I went to Cedar City several times, a lot of my friends attended Southern Utah University. I know live in Fort Worth, TX; I miss those mountains! :hi:

16. Where I grew up

In John Steinbeck's day. The sign atop the building below the left edge of the "Salinas" sign reads "Hotel Cominos." Steinbeck was a regular at the hotel bar.

The "Salinas" sign was still there when I was a kid in the early '60s. So were the Fox Theatre and the Polly Anna Bakery at right.

The building at right with the banner over the yellow façade is Johnny's Bar and Grill, aka Bleeker's Cafe in "The Wild One." It's where the whole mess started in 1947.

I used to work right around the corner from the white building at center. Loved being in the middle of the chaos. :headbang:

68. Oh, the one they blew up was from 1952.

It was essentially aluminum! I had thought it was being converted to lofts/apartments but I guess the plans didn't quite come together. The two lovely ones in this shot were converted for residential living a few years back. With the exception of a small library, Fort Worth has been excellent in recycling their old skyscrapers. Most all are now apartments.

And yes, the Trinity has always been a lovely meatloaf shade. :D

64. It was, during the pipeline buildup and construction.

Every other building was a bar, and every other woman (no guys, rats) was a "lady of the night". Pipeliners were known to easily drop $5,000 in a night or two! It was quite crazy. You could be walking down the street with your husband/boyfriend, and the hookers would still proposition him - and sometimes you, too!

A good book about those days is called "Pipe Dreams" by Dermot Cole. It's also become a rather popular play.

I'm glad the "good old days" are gone!
