Poll question: How many DUers are on your "ignore list"?
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 04:50 PM by onehandle
I've had a couple of people say, "Welcome to my ignore list" in the past. There's no one on my ignore list because I don't fear words like Republicans do.

1. Why do I need an ignore list? I just cruise on past the posts I don't
want to bother with.

ok, i don't know much about the ignore feature . . . and would not use it if i DID know more. it just seems to me to be a form of censorship . . . albeit only to the censor. just doesn't seem very open-minded.

39. I think you are confusing
their right to free speech, with others rights not to listen. I ignore people in chat rooms all the time because they come in ranting BILL CLINTON CAUSED 9/11 and LIBRULS ARE BABEE KILLERZ!!! in giant red fonts. If I were standing on the street and some lunatic walked up to me and began yelling insanities in my face, I'd turn my back and walk away. To me that is what the ignore feature is. But in here, I don't use it because I've found that idiots either get tombstoned or I can enjoy watching fellow DUers rip them a new one. Then the next day, those same people may be in complete agreement on another issue. Freedom of iggy! It just means you aren't listening to them. It doesn't mean they can't speak.

Even when I run into someone who doesn't agree with me, the debate is usually interesting enough to keep going. At least here on DU. There have been times I've needed to reassess my position, and how could I do that if I didn't at least listen to what someone else had to say?

I'm amazed at how many times I am arguing a point with a fellow poster on one thread, and then, five minutes later, we're in total agreement on another thread, another issue.

This site, to me, represents an exchange of ideas. How can you exchange ideas, if you cut yourself off from hearing the ones you may not agree with?

Quite frankly, that sounds so ... so... so ... dare I say it? It sounds so Republican.

30. Yeah, but it's like TV ...
... you can simply change the channel, if you don't want to look at what's on it. I don't think it's so terribly onerous to start reading a post and then just visually 'ignore' it, if I don't want to read it, whatever the reason may be.

43. It is like TV, I (used to) have faux blocked so wouldn't be inadvertently
subjected to their assault on intelligence, same thing here. I've succumbed to the temptation to just check it out, and find in every case, the time I spent reading it was wasted.

I'd feel like I'm missing something. Everyone's got their own perspective to offer, even if I don't agree with (or like it) 99% of the time. Wouldn't it get confusing to try to follow threads?

19. Why bother? If you know that a thread is by someone who's absolutely
annoying or that you feel is just a waste of time, skip it. Once in a while this same person may post something that would be a shame to miss. Something important, some tidbit of information that enriches your DU (and political) experience.

The odds of someone being wrong (or an ass) all the time have to be astronomical.

It's different than in a chat room in that you don't have to read posts if you don't want to. Plus, I figure if someone is annoying enough, I will grab my  and see how many posts the troll can get in before his "pizza" arrives.

Even the most irritating comments/opinions I don't ignore. I may not respond, but I certaintly don't ignore them. I'll do my own research If I need to.
I'm not really a great "one-line community" person
I'm a better communicater in "real" life-- if I see arguements here that I see out "there" I'm better prepared to make my point. Or even to offer an opposing view from my own, to help 'em out if they need it. Anything to get people off their asses and CARE. That irritates me worse than people who don't agree with me. The ones with no passion, no caring, no knowledge, and no desire to get any-- except to watch fox news maybe

Of course RW nuts are excluded from all consideration, since they make no sense, not that I haven't tried to see where they're coming from. It gives me a brain burn though. No logic. No compassion.

56. There are some people who just HAVE to argue, no matter
what the subject. They have fits when no one agrees with them. They don't know how to have a discussion in an adult manner.
Those folks are on ignore. (And believe me, I don't put people on ignore the first time they drive me nuts. The ones who get that honor have earned it.) ;)
Then there are the 'screamers.' The people who post in capital letters, always in bold, with a font size that makes Texas look small.
I'm not talking one sentence. I'm talking paragraphs. Those people are on ignore. I got sick of being blindsided by the screaming posts. LOL. So poof, gone.
I love the ignore button. I'm not afraid of 'words.' It's not about censorship. It's all about rude people. I wouldn't put up with them in real life and I don't have to put up with them on any message board. The ignore button. It makes DU a much nicer place.

Funny thing is, for all the names I have on ignore, it's rare to see the 'ignore' pop up in a thread.
So I'm not missing much. :)

I'm kinda thinking there are a LOT of people on ignore on DU. I'm just brave enough to admit I put people there. LOL.
