"Food" that should be extinct...
I just had my first taste of red bean ice cream and all I can ask, people of Asian extraction, is WHY? Why would anyone walk past an entire freezer of Haagen Dazs and pick up frozen mashed beans indifferently mixed with pounds and pounds of sugar? I can understand if you're at Stalingrad and starving and all you have is a can of beans and some Extra and nothing to cook them with then maybe you would eat this, but given modern advances in culinary science, why does anybody still produce let alone consume bean ice cream? It's not like you're walking down the dessert aisle looking for the best nutritional bargain.

Which foods' continuing existence do you find mystifying?

123. Born into it.
It's a weird, acquired taste.
You have to be introduced at a very early age.
Even that won't do it, many times.

It's a Swedish staple on Christmas Eve. ( Julafton)

138. The why is easy to answer.
The Scandinavians did it because when you live in a climate that cold, you need every food preservation technique you can come up with.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that lutefisk is nasty as hell.

75. Yeah, I always disliked them because my mom would just
boil them or steam them. I could eat them with plenty of Cajun seasoning on top, so I wouldn't refuse to eat them, but I certainly was never happy to see them on my plate.

Last year, my mom got some fresh organic ones and cooked them up in this pasta en brodo dish. Mmmmm...heavenly. Now I can't wait for them to be in season!

28. A few reasons
Cost, shelf life, almost no chance of dangerous bacteria (although cheddar made from pasteurized milk is pretty much that safe too), and melt. The existance of American cheese also lowers the price of cheddar because there is a market for cheese that quite didn't make the cut and trim cheese.

7. Moldy cheeses and boiled "greens" (which are usually brown...)
Last time, folks.... Mold is a sign of spoilage. Throw the Stilton, the Gorgonzola and the Bleu out. They've gone bad.

And as far as greens are concerned... any food that you must cook for several hours in multiple changes of water to render it edible ... is not edible. It's poisonous, and the only thing left when you're done is a pile of boiled cellulose. If that's what floats your boat, then recycle. Boil up your newspaper. It will taste about the same and have more nutritional value. (Spinach is fine. I'm talking mustard, collard, kale, beet, etc.)

65. You've had badly cooked greens
A quick dunk in boiling water, bringing the greens out when they are bright and colorful, will do fine. Collard greens can be sauteed lightly in olive oil and garlic, too. It's not at all necessary to boil any of those greens into submission, and when you don't, they're pretty and quite tasty.

They have to be cooked with other ingredients that are quite savory such as, for example, onions and feta. Otherwise the sweetness makes me kinda queasy. x(

:P I love real sugar too. In reasonable amounts, of course.

But corn syrup has a nasty taste and isn't nearly as sweet as real sugar.

Splenda isn't as good as real sugar, but is far better than corn syrup.

27. Surstromming...
fermented (that is to say, rotten) herring...considered a delicacy in Sweden, for some reason. It's canned, and the gases cause the can to bulge ominously (they've even been known to explode from the pressure). The stench is so indescribably foul that the cans have to be opened under water, and it's only eaten outdoors. In comparison, lutefisk is a tasty treat. (What is it with Scandinavians and disgusting food, anyway?)

I'm impressed by how many of you know Swedish food.

Being raised by Swedes, ( I'm the only US born in the family)
I agree.

Man, surstromming is nasty! I would never touch it, much less get within 50 feet of it.
Lutefisk I've gotten used to. It still doesn't excuse the texture of the fish- Jelly!!

I think the weird food had a lot to do with how they preserved food way back
when.

Either that or they are closet masochists! LOL

Don't get me wrong- I'm Swedish American and love those Swedes!

57. Milk: Seven drops of pus per glass.

By US federal law, Grade A milk is allowed to have over a drop of pus per glass of milk.<11>

<11.> Assuming a billion lymphocytes/ml as a reasonable defining concentration of pus, regulations per (Heeschen WH. Codex regulations and food safety. Bulletin of the International Dairy Federation 1997;319:24), a standard 20 drops/ml, and a "glass" as 500 cc, Grade A milk may have more than seven drops of pus per glass. (Emphasis mine.)

This is a particular problem in the United States, as we have the highest permitted upper limit of milk pus cell concentration in the world--almost twice the international standard of allowable pus cells (750,000/ml vs. 400,000/ml)<10>

Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 04:21 PM by Frank Cannon
Just adds a LITTLE bit of a salty quality to it. Lots of immune factors in it too.

I've been drinking at LEAST two glasses of milk every day for at least 30 years. Several years ago, I broke a bone in my hand and more than DOUBLED that amount. The physicians x-rayed my hand and couldn't believe how fast it had healed.

You know what? Opinions about diet are like a$$holes: Everyone has one and everyone else's stink. I, for one, like milk. If there are drops of pus in it, I like those too. Enjoy what you want to eat/drink and I will enjoy what I want. And it's a beautiful country we live in, because we all have that freedom of our own opinions.

Calling someone an idiot for being a vegetarian or vegan is not only against DU rules, but shows a very, very closed mind. If you take a better look at this "food pyramid" of which you speak (you are a college boy, right?) you'll see that it's not "shunning 70%" of it, as you've stated.

Calling a post idiotic, as you have, is, however one way to ensure that the poster does NOT invite you over for dinner.

77. pork or beef brains, prepared in any form
brains and eggs was a "treat" in my family...absolutely disgusting.

In Evansville Indiana at the fall festival, the longest food line by far is the brain sandwich line.
People walk around with these incredibly light fluffy fritter looking things and you think, Man that looks good until you catch up with the source and realize it is actually the dreaded brain sandwich.

Apparantly the brains are chopped up and mixed in with this fritter batter and flash fried. No amount of money could convince me to eat one. I have wondered if the brain sandwich vendor is still around since the onset of mad cow disease fears.

I wholeheartedly agree with the anti head cheese/souse group. That stuff should be declared illegal. I have memories of it being made from my childhood on the farm. It is so disgusting looking.

Along with organ meat (except for veal or calves liver)

All foods which are testicular in origin.

Tripe

Lutefisk has to be just awful, and isn't there something similar in the kosher food family?

All those weird salami/bologna/conjured up lunch meat things. The only acceptable lunch meat is ham, sliced roast beef or sliced turkey.

127. This has to be the best thread ever
I have tried and loved ochra... except for the slime. Cook it right and it's great. And I'm not a great fan of cooked greens.

Grits? Lovely... but ya need LOTS of butter.

Haven't tried haggis, but I have tried blood sausage... great.

I think basically, any over processed food should be eliminated. Velveeta is a perfect example, and I grew up on Velveeta and grilled cheese sandwiches. Love grilled cheese sandwiches, but not with processed cheese. Gawd with a good cheddar or brie or jack or Swiss--yum.

I could never understand the allure of head cheese or mortadella. I had a friend who used to go to the deli and bring back all these so called delicacies, including head cheese. I avoided them like the plague that they are. On the other hand, I grew up eating bologna sandwiches. Won't eat bologna today, however.

Spam? It's great if you like salt and don't care what it comes on.

Fresh is the key. Processed... fugettaboutit.

146. Sometimes I think the food choices of other cultures
is disgusting and I would never eat it, personally. But somehow, some things evidently have some followers or they would have been "extinct" a long time ago.

I do have issues with nations that eat dog or cat meat or do other horrendous things to some domesticated animals, but who is to say that I am right? Just because the U.S. and most Western cultures eschew the consumption of our companion animals doesn't mean our tradition is any better or worse than anothers. While I do try to live with that fact, nevertheless, eating Rex, Spot, Blackie or Kitkat is repulsive to me. And that also goes for the human consumption of eating horse meat. Rounding up such beautiful animals as the wild mustangs only to ship them overseas for some rich bastard to chop it up and serve it at a BBQ is purely disgusting.

As far as real foods that I personally think should go away permanently, there are way too many! But let's start (or rather stop) with jerky, pork rinds, tofu (I'm semi-vegetarian but I hate tofu), eel, octopus, chocolate covered insects or fried insects, live creatures (there was an episode of CSI: NY a few weeks ago that centered on "exotic" foods and several of the above were among the "delicacies" prepared), and other such items.

In addition, I would welcome the end to such "tasty" snacks such as Twinkies, Little Debbie's, and any other such products loaded with trans fatty acids and a chief cause of early heart disease. Processed foods in general--frozen, canned and ready-to-eat products contain more sodium than most people need in a day, are also filled with unnecessary fats and other fillers, and make sure that life expectancy is lowered in general.

I also wish that instead of some of the stupider topics taught in schools, they would at least consider teaching more about nutrition in general. If people learned at a younger age more about the foods they eat, I think we would see a revolution in eating habits and help change the choices some kids make as a result of not knowing or understanding what they are doing with their current diets. I mean, it took me a long time to see where my own weaknesses are, but after going shopping with my mom just a few years ago, I can understand why I am overweight and subject to health products. Her choices for meals includes hard slabs of margarine, the afore mentioned snack cakes, white pasta, lots of pork, etc. I shudder to think what my life would be like now if I were still eating many of these things.
