3. WHY the hell would they refer to him as a Silver medalist when he won
gold? Because he silvered in that particular event?

I mean, you are whatever the highest medal you earned, I'd think. That's what you are henceforth known as.

GOLD medalist Shani Davis.

I mean, sacrifice a good chunk of your life excelling at something, to get so good at it so that at your one brief shining moment of fame, you are the greatest on the PLANET at that thing, maybe you get to earn some endorsement money (maybe NOT), and you can basically never make real money performing in your event in the future... you've EARNED the right to be called a GOLD MEDALIST. Sheesh.

5. Arrgh I just read it. In THREE paragraphs, they call a gold medalist a
silver medalist, and spend a sentence mentioning the feud.

6. I think they did it correctly
Since the entire article is about a single event, it would be confusing to refer to him based on a medal won in a different event. If they were discussing him as a skater in general he would be "an Olympic gold-medalist", but in the context of the 1500 m specifically he is a silver-medalist...
