Bird Flu-Any one a tiny bit worried?

We have all been making fun of storing food under our beds and all but seriously-how worried are you really. I am not usually an alarmist, I did not prepare at all for Y2K, I don't buy out the store prior to snowstorms. I am more concerned about this then I have ever been in the past. Maybe the whole Katrina debacle made me more aware that our Gov is not prepared at all. Or maybe we are just due in that we have not had a major pandemic in about 30 year or so.

I am I right or wrong in wanting to be prepared this time around?

I'm a fatalist......Prepare as much as possible, and then stop worrying!

We are, more or less, prepared for earthquakes.....

YOu're supposed to have some big barrel full of stuff to keep you alive for three days or something like that.....

We don't have the barrel, but I do have sufficient water, food and so on to keep us going in the event of a super earthquake...

I have lived here nearly all my life, and have yet to be really impacted by one.

The risk is much less than you might think. The building codes are very strong, and we have a new, very over-built house; plus we have a generator for electricity......

I'm not worried, as I said......

Because I feel just as CaliforniaPeggy does. Why worry? I'm gonna die sometime. If is isn't an earthquake, it might just be a fire or mudslide that gets me. There is always something to worry about in California. Bird flu? I laugh in its feathered eye! HAHAHA!

My luck, I'll die of old age, sitting in a wheelchair in some horrible nursing home, drool trailing down my chin. I'd rather die of bird flu.

In all seriousness, I'm truly not worried. We ARE all going to die someday. Why worry about when and how? Just enjoy life today.
Heck, the way * is going, we'll all probably be dead within a year, after some pissed off country drops a nice big bomb on us.

I'm such a positive and upbeat person. :evilgrin:


(Our family IS prepared for fire. We live in a very dry and hilly area. It's a given that someday this area will burn. We'd be stupid if we weren't prepared in that manner. As to whether it will happen in my lifetime, or before I am able to escape to Italy, who knows?) :)

2. Yes. I'm a mom. I'm worried, but I'm not torturing myself over it.

We have supplies at the fire station---water, MREs left from Katrina, protective gear, and I'm ordering some masks this week for the first responders/fire fighters.

I don't like sea-food and I try not to eat to much red meat (although I love it so :) )

4. I am an RN and I am not in the least worried..

Most flus start from birds anyway. The flu season here in the US kills thousands every year, it is important to keep healthy and have good sanitizing habits. This strain reminds me of the SARS epidemic, remember that? People didn't seem to half as worried as they are about this one for some reason.

The true PANDEMIC here is HEPATITIS, although... no one seems to wanna talk about that. :shrug:

I worry about flu in general slightly more than the average person because of that, so I imagine I'm also more worried about bird flu because of it.

my husband regularly works w. the poultry industry, if there is anything to worry abt or if i mysteriously disappear then you can worry

but trust me, there is NOTHING to worry abt

sleep well and don't waste your money

there aren't any real preparations you can make against the flu anyway, except the usual wash your hands before you eat or touch your face

I always have a big pantry. I always grow a supplemental garden. If it hit, we'd be able to stay home for months. It wouldn't be much fun, but then again a pandemic can't really be that fun either.

It is always a good idea to be prepared. A natural disaster kit is useful in all parts of the country. Keeping a bit of extra food on hand is not a bad idea. Leavitt had the right idea - sans the powdered milk and tuna. Just pick up two extra of your normal food items when you restock them. If you do it a little at a time, it doesn't require a huge financial output.
