I just cut my hair off... again.
I'm starting to think that I might have some sort of problem. In October, I cut my hair really short--I had always had long hair, and I was sick of it, and I was in the bathroom and I just started cutting it until it was short.

A few weeks after that, I cut off some more of it bc I wanted it a little shorter.

Then I let it grow for a little while, but I kept trimming it to keep it neat.

Tonight, I looked in the mirror at my hair (which was getting ungainly--it was long on the right side and shorter on the left and when I blowed it dry I looked like the missing character from Chips or Dukes of Hazzard) and I got pissed off and I cut it.

Except this time, I cut it to about 1-1 1/2 inches all the way around. And I almost didn't stop. I honestly considered cutting it as short as I possibly could and then shaving my head.

WHy the hell would I want to do that?????

Anyone else ever just compulsively done something like this?

1. I did about 20 years ago
It was strange. Only I kept having to cut because each side became uneven, etc.

2. I came very, very close in high school
When I had waist-length hair. I just got sick of it, and almost shaved it one night, but was pretty sure I'd hate myself the next day.

Turns out, that "short" impulse apparently has to come out eventually, this is me now:

And it's been shorter than that; I'm growing it out again a bit.

3. Almost cut my hair
Almost Cut My Hair
(Crosby Stills Nash Young)

Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It's gettin kinda long
I coulda said it wasn't in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Cause I feel like I owe it to someone

Must be because I had the flu for Christmas
And I'm not feeling up to par
It increases my paranoia
Like looking at my mirror and seeing a police car
But I'm not giving in an inch to fear
Cause I missed myself this year
I feel like I owe it to someone

When I finally get myself together
I'm going to get down in that sunny southern weather
And I find a place inside to laugh
Separate the wheat from the chaff
I feel like I owe it to someone

5. I shaved the back of mine on impulse in junior high
I had no idea why I wanted to do it, just saw the clippers and did it. I left the top long, just shaved about two inches at the nape of my neck.

Oddly enough a few years later, after my hair had grown out, that was briefly in fashion.

6. Could be a form of trichotillomania
The obsessive pulling out of one's own hair. Especially if you kept doing it even if you didn't really want to.

7. I have a habit of attempting to grow mine out
and then usually not having the patience to see it through. Since first growing it out in late high school, I've gotten it cut fairly short to very short and then grown it out again three or four different times (and I'm only 22!). The thing is, I like my hair long, but it's thick and has an uneven wave to it so it can be pretty awkward during the growing-out period. And since I'm a guy, I'd feel weird wearing clips, bobby pins, etc., to hold it back, so I end up getting it cut in frustration but then regretting it and deciding to grow it out again... until it hits another awkward stage and I decide to go get it chopped once again!

9. Only once...and then (after) I rememberd the hideous scar on the
back of my skull from an accident with a bobby pin when I was a child. I never made that mistake again. I've kept my hair long for about 15 years now. :hi:
