The Smiths turned down $5 million reunion offer
AUSTIN, Texas (Billboard) - Pioneering U.K. modern rock band the Smiths turned down a $5 million offer to reunite at the upcoming Coachella Valley Arts & Music Festival in southern California, former frontman Morrissey said Thursday.

His revelation, during a public interview at the South By Southwest Music & Media Conference in Austin, triggered gasps from the audience. When journalist David Fricke asked if he had considered it, Morrissey replied, "No, because money doesn't come into it," a response that drew applause from the crowd.

Of the critically adored act, which broke up in the late 1980s, Morrissey said, "It was a fantastic journey. And then it ended. I didn't feel we should have ended. I wanted to continue. (Smiths guitarist
Johnny Marr) wanted to end it. And that was that."

2. I used to love The Smiths.
They were part of the soundtrack to my teenage angst bullshit years.

3. I didn't start appreciating them until after they broke up
Why? Because I had been listening to all the wrong music up until my 19th birthday.
1987 was a very good year for me music-wise.

:hi:

Let the past be the past. Then again, if anyone could get away with it, it would be them.

7. If I tried to pass myself off as Morrissey,
I'd look like Elvis in his dead-on-the-toilet era.

27. I would love to find myself a set of off white coffee cups with lids!
I would giggle a bit every time I used them, and I would check inside before the first sip too, just to be sure!

29. I have a set!
I don't remember exactly where I got them. I think it was at a kitchen outlet store. I'll keep an eye out and let you know if I ever see any again.

And yes, I do check to make sure the liquid looks ok.

10. Good. Most reunions are a huge disappointment
with the exception of the first version of The Stooges, most reunions are pretty sorry affairs. Even the mighty Sex Pistols reunion was pretty tepid.

Morrissey needs to continue his pointless solo career, and Marr needs to find something to do besides session work. Reuniting would only show how poor both of their careers have been since the Smiths days. From a career standpoint, it would be a disaster.

15. I didn't get into them until way after they were popular
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 04:52 PM by Rob H.
I think I picked up a "Best of" compilation about six years ago and really liked it (still do) and have picked up quite a few of their CDs since. They were popular when I was in high school but for some reason I never listened to them way back then. Even though I'm not technically a long-time fan I'm glad they aren't reuniting and doing the whole "nostalgia rock" thing.

28. I just wondered...
Did the Smiths breakup coincide at all with the discovery of Proziac.....

They never floated my boat...

Always a bit on the whiney side for me...

I never saw the attraction....

I guess I was older then than I am now....

Cause Girlfriend in a Coma....

That's rockin'
